50 years is a long time for any single nameplate to last, and the Ford Mustang ranks amongst the few cars in the world to maintain five decades of continuous sales. Knowing what a big deal this was, the Blue Oval pulled out all the stops when it came to ensuring that the 2015 Mustang lived up to its legendary reputation. The result has been a critical and sales success.
For the ninth month in a row, Mustang sales have outpaced sales of both the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger, reports Torque News. The Ford muscle car now has a seemingly insurmountable lead over its crosstown competitors, with about 50% more sales at this point in the year than the Camaro, though all three muscle cars are on track for great years.
First and foremost, the 2015 Mustang saw sales slip somewhat in July, a typically tough sales month. However, Ford Motor Company overall posted its best July sales since 2006, and the surge of interest in the all-new Mustang has helped pad profits. In July, Ford sold 8,492 Mustangs, bringing the seven-month total for 2015 to 76,772 (though the Mustang has technically held the sales lead since last November).
If Ford can keep up this sales pace, it will sell somewhere in the neighborhood of 130,000 Mustangs in 2015. It’s nearest competitor, the Chevy Camaro, has so far moved a little over 50,000 units, with the Challenger back at 42,162. The Challenger should easily eclipse 2014 sales of about 51,000 units though, and with the 2016 Camaro slated to launch this fall, GM could regain some ground before 2015 is over.
The American muscle car is alive and well.
