The Motor Press Guild’s annual track day is a much-loved event for automotive media since we often get to experience exciting new vehicles for the first time on Willow Springs International Motorsports Park. The Smoking Tire’s Matt Farrah got to experience both the new 2.3L EcoBoost four-cylinder engine as well as the all-new 2015 GT featuring the big Coyote V8. Right out of the pits on his 2015 Mustang GT track test he notices a big difference in shifter feel, torque and sound as he compares the EcoBoost’s engine sound to the Ford Focus, which isn’t exactly a compliment for a pony car. His positive impressions are evident as he enthusiastically declares, “Hello! Now this is a Mustang!”
The much anticipated independent rear suspension also seemed to impress Farrah as he traverses some uneven pavement at speed. “It’s a little bumpy, but damn is this thing composed.” He is less complimentary of the stock seats as he wholeheartedly recommends the Recaros which are available in the GT and on the EcoBoost separate from the Track Pack.
Most importantly though, is that Farrah admits the 2015 S550 retains the Mustang vibe, while improving on that familiarity with a much more modern feeling car. He is able to get onto the power sooner, brake later and handle more speed in the corners. We look forward to being able to share his experience soon. You can watch the Mustang EcoBoost video here:
