From the moment Ford announced that it would build a line of turbocharged “EcoBoost” engines to meet upcoming fuel economy standards, rumors started circling about the return of the Mustang SVO. The Mustang SVO was a turbocharged four-cylinder Mustang made in the mid-80’s, and while it has a cult following the cars themselves are few and far between.
But turbocharger technology has come a long way since the 80’s, and the idea of an EcoBoost Mustang is pretty much a given at this point. But the latest rumor to circulate the Interweb via Top Gear’s website has the 2015 EcoBoost Mustang sharing an engine with the Focus RS.
Magazines, Ford execs, and even Bill Ford Jr. himself have all but confirmed Ford’s plans to stuff an EcoBoost four-banger under the hood of the next Mustang. The rumors all disagree as to the exact size of the engine, as it is rumored to be between 2.0 liters and 2.3 liters, an homage to the original. Horsepower will at least match that of the upcoming Focus ST, which sits at 247 ponies.
Top Gear’s inside man claims that at least 320 horsepower will be on tap for the 2.3 liter turbo engine, which will have to be engineered to fit both rear-wheel and front-wheel drive configurations. This matches previous rumors that have suggested a 300+ horsepower Focus RS. Don’t expect an all-wheel drive Focus RS either; Ford wants to keep the weight down, so all-wheel drive isn’t an option.
Are these rumors to be believed? Every day brings us one step closer to the next-generation Mustang, and Ford has a lot riding on its success. Let’s hope they get it right.
