Ford threw down the gauntlet at the Los Angeles Auto Show this year, unveiling a 650 horsepower Shelby GT500 that laid the smackdown on the recently-announced Camaro ZL1. With a top speed of 202 MPH, the Shelby has taken American muscle to a new level, leaving all competitors in its dust.
And just to rub some salt in the wound, TopSpeed reports that Ford will unveil a droptop version of the 2013 Shelby GT500, just a few weeks after GM unveiled the convertible Camaro ZL1.
Like the rest of the 2013 Mustang lineup, the new GT500 convertible will get a cooler, edgier design that is more 21st century. That includes revised LED taillights, new wheels, a techier interior, and just a meaner, madder look. And of course, the new 5.8 liter 650 horsepower V8 engine that got the automotive world all abuzz.
This has got to be a little heartbreaking for the Camaro ZL1 engineers, who unveiled a droptop version of their supercar just a few weeks ago in L.A. It’s unlikely that the droptop Shelby will still achieve the same 200+ mph top speed as the coupe, but it will still blow the pants off of the Camaro ZL1, we’re betting.
