The 2012 Boss Mustang is going to be one hot ticket when it hits the market next year. It has been decades since a worthy successor to the original Boss hit the streets, and the iconic name is sure to bring out many collectors and big spenders. Just like the original Boss though, not everyone is going to be able to get their hands on this iconic, instant-classic car.

The Mustang News reports that a leaked memo to Ford dealerships indicates that not every dealership may get a new Boss Mustang.

We had already expected that the Boss Mustang, much like the GT500, would be available in limited quantities. How limited, we did not know, though now we have a bit of a better idea. 75% of the 2012 Boss Mustangs will be distributed to those dealerships who sell 75% of Mustangs in the U.S. This is called “share of nation”, and essentially those dealerships who sell more Mustangs, will get more Boss Mustangs, though the top 75% of dealerships will each get at least one.

The rest of the 25% of Boss Mustang production will be performed via a lottery system. The 25% of dealerships not already getting a Mustang will each get one “chip” in the lottery. For each Mustang they sold last year, they get an additional chip, meaning those who sold the most Mustangs have a better chance of getting a Boss. The Laguna Seca Boss Mustang will be dolled out only through a lottery, meaning all dealerships have an equal chance of getting one.

Considering Ford has around 3,800 dealerships in the U.S., does that mean there will be less than 3,800 Boss Mustangs built? We’ll have to wait for Ford to weigh in to find out.
