Handling has allot to do with it too. One must handle their tool with care. If you are not gentle, you will surely scuff your nuts, especially if the tool is rusty.

when you buy new lug nuts try putting a shop rag around them when you put the final torque on them. make sure your wrench is in good shape as well

yes- a bad tool can cause rust, try useing a SMALL amount of antiseeze on the threads(coppertype best for lugnuts) and use the best tools, it does make a diff.

How do you fit the shop rag between the socket and the lug?
