ROUSH is well known in the aftermarket world for their work on the Mustang, producing many variants of the popular pony car as well as a line of performance products for the Do-it-yourself crowd. They also produce a line of souped-up pickup trucks based around the F-150 platform, in lieu of an actual Lightning variant from Ford itself. ROUSH is branching out into green technology however, leaving behind martial pursuits in search of something cleaner and more economical. To that end they have produced a propane conversion kit for the F-150 which allows your pickup to convert over to liquid propane, a much cleaner burning and sometimes-cheaper fuel.
The $8,595 kit can be installed in about 8 hours and replaces the fuel pump, injectors, and ECU with ROUSH parts, in addition to either a 25 gallon under-bed fuel tank or a 59 gallon tank that sits in the back of the truck bed. In terms of drivability, the truck maintains the same power and torque and can haul as much as either the gas or diesel variants of the F-150. Gas mileage seems to suffer a bit, hovering between 10 and 14 MPG of the much cleaner burning fuel.
In economic terms, the truck conversion doesn't make much sense unless you plan on purchasing a fleet of them. The wholesale price of propane drops from about $2 a gallon to a $1 a gallon, in addition to a $.50 per gallon tax credit from the government. Factor in another $2500 credit per propane powered vehicle, and maybe some contractors who employ many trucks might consider switching over to a cleaner fuel source.
