Project Sun Devil's Baseline Runs at Irwindale
The powerTV Crew went to Irwindale and tested all of their projects, including Project Sun Devil. Project Sun Devil is my 2000 Mustang GT. I've owned a lot of different Mustangs before (yes, I truly am a car girl despite what has been suggested) including a twin-turbo Mustang. This, my GT, is by far the most stock.

During powerTV’s recent field trip to the local 1/8-mile drag strip, I tested my 2000 Mustang Convertible, Project Sun Devil. It’s been on the track plenty times before but I wanted to get some good baseline times before we really start tinkering with it. It’s not completely stock; I do have my Dynomax Ultra Flow Mufflers, which make it sound a lot faster than it is! But for the most part these times will be out starting point for the project.

On the first pass, I got a little over zealous on the RPM’s and launched way too high, spinning the tires out all of the through first gear. Needless to say my 60ft as well as my ET were horrible! The 2nd pass, I launched it much less aggressively lowering my 60ft to 2.345 and my ET to 9.622. This was better than the first run, but I knew I get more out of it. This time I launched it just perfectly and got my 60ft down to 2.202 with a 9.368 at 76.03 mph. Not bad for my little stock convertible with street tires and a fairly amateur driver. But either way you look at it, I definitely need some more power!

I’ve had my Mustang for over two years now, but we’ve been so busy with various project cars and video shoots that I’ve neglected to do much of anything to it. Well, things are about to change for my little Project Sun Devil. It will always be kept as a 100% street legal car, but who says I can’t have a little fun with it?

The first set of mods will be the simple obvious bolt ons, a High Flow Power Pipe, Air Filter and a High Flow Inlet Pipe to get as much power out of my 281 as possible. We’ll also get rid of the awful 3.27 stock gears and install some 3.73 gears. This will give me some much-needed torque to the rear wheels for next time we go to the track. And then of course we’ll do a custom tune to get everything running together at maximum potential.

Where will we go from there? Well, if you were to ask me that question, I would throw a pair of turbos on it and have some real fun! But until someone comes out with a street legal twin turbo kit or California changes their ridiculously strict laws, I am out of luck (and turbos).

Keep an eye out for the future mods and testing of Project Sun Devil on www.stangtv.com!
