Pre-Qualifying Pit Notes

Conrad Scarry is here with a brand new paint job on his Mustang. The team didn’t spend a whole lot of time on it as most of their attention was put toward fixing the transmission. Last race the car was limited to low gear only. This weekend the team hopes high gear will take them into the finals.

With a refreshed combo is Dan Rawls. The team as refreshed the engine and the transmission. With the amount of heat and humidity here in Charlotte, he hopes to see high 40s in the first round.

Jason Lee rolled into the lanes early in the test and tune session. After only 200 feet the car broke the tires loose and Jason just let it roll for the rest of the track. Lee is still playing with the setup on the motor, its been refreshed sense the last race.

Matt Bell is here with his Drag Radial car. This is an all new motor for the team so they will be trying to take advantage of this test and tune session before the first round of qualifying.

Mike Murrillo was very reserved after his testing pass. He was spotted in Texas doing some testing trying to work a few bugs out of the car. The team wouldn’t let much information out about the car, but as always, look for the SCT sponsored car to be a contender this weekend.

John Urist and the Hellion team are banking on the night setup of the car to take them to the finals. John feels the track is going to get a lot sticker as the sun drops, but in the heat he hopes to see low 50s or high 40s in the quarter mile.

One quick note on AJ Powell. Rumor is the team was not able to get that car back together after the motor let go last race. Looks like he won’t be able to make it this weekend.

Index classes are in the lanes and on the track. We'll be looking for the heads-up cars in the lanes soon!

Q1 Results
Round one qualifying for the NMRA heads-up cars started with Drag Radial.

David Guy has been about the only guy to get down the track today with out spinning the tires or tossing it sideways. Even Jason Lee fell victim to the slick track conditions as he currently sits in second.

Drag Radial

David Guy: 8.187@179.52
Jason Lee: 8.605@165.68
3) Ken Ewer: 8.696@163.53
4) Pete Johnson: 8.802@163.93
5) Steve Thompson: 8.985@157.30
6) Matt Bell: 9.003@170.90
7) Sean Lyon: 9.051 @162.00
8) Jeff Lorch: 9.689@155.70
9) Enzo Pecchini: 9.929@147.26
10) Marvin Bridge: 11.148@86.76
Steven Biggs: 11.159@96.96

Next up was Renegade.

Chris VanGilder is the fastest pushrod powered car in the class and is an even .10 behind Alton Clements and his 4.6 Modular powerplant.

Renegade

1) Alton Clements: 8.784@159.42
2) Chris VanGilder: 8.884@156.08
3) Chad Almandinger: 8.903@155.04

7) Dan Rawls: 12.060@69.34
8) Brian Tuten: 14.114@61.07

In Factory Stock, Tommy Godfrey is showing the rest of the class that the weather doesn’t effect him. He leads Jay Dold and the rest of the field by almost .30. Look for the rest of the guys to close the gap as the sun goes down.

Factory Stock

1) Tommy Godfrey: 11.180@119.87
2) Jay Dold: 11.413@118.11
3) Jim St Charles: 11.496@119.57

5) John Leslie Jr: 12.120@88.75
6) Zane Reed: 12.292@111.65
Jeremy Taylor: 12.472@105.22

Jimmy Wilson’s car was one of the few that really got their car’s to hook. Unfortunately, it hooked so well the it brought the front end up and came down a little rough resulting in a number six qualifying run in Pure Street.

Pure Street

1) Steve Gifford: 10.288@132.21
2) Brad Meadows: 10.395@130.18
3) Ryan Hecox: 10.411@129.42

6) Jimmy Wilson: 10.659@107.13
Teddy Weaver: 12.115@84.21

Paul Wiley had a good run qualifying number 2 in Real Street, but he is .20 behind number one qualifying Bruce Hemminger.

Real Street

1) Bruce Hemminger: 9.680@140.28
2) Paul Wiley : 9.872@138.94

5) Matthew Johnson: 10.426@106.35
Dave Ginter: 11.563@119.33

In Hot Street, Robbie Blankenship came out and qualified number one in his ’04 Mustang.

Hot Street

1) Robbie Blankenship: 8.778@153.44
2) Charlie Booze JR.: 8.860@150.03
3) Don Bowles: 8.872@152.88
4) Richard Preiser: 9.228@129.64
5) Max Gross: 9.335@156.17
6) Jim Sutterlin: 9.402@134.98
7) Rick Riccardi: 9.411@146.67

John Urist put himself on top of the Super Street Outlaw run-sheet when he drove his Mustang to a 7.525.

Don Burton had a rough run as he smoked the tires about mid track and coasted the rest of the track.

Super Street Outlaw

1) John Urist: 7.525@194.07
2) Chris Tuten: 7.753@187.44
3) John MacDonald: 8.199@181.96
Don Burton: 12.823@72.72

Dyayne James didn’t get to far off the line. The car sounded like it had a problem with the limiter and stalled right off the line.

Pro Outlaw 10.5

1) Conrad Scarry: 7.264@157.25
2) Dan Millen : 7.516@158.74
3) Mike Murillo: 8.353@124.83

Notes From The Pits

Dwayne James had problems out on the track. The car wouldn’t come up off the rev-limiter, so when he tried to launch the car, it just stalled. The team went back into the electronics to see if the problem was there, but nothing was a miss. Now they are going through the rest of the car to see if they can find the problem before the next round.

Brian Tuten has had a rough couple of hours. The engine that is currently in the car is the second motor in 24 hours. The last engine threw a rod out the oil pan on the dyno at 12:30 am last night. As a result, he has only been making runs about 200 ft out. Look for him to make his first full pass tomorrow.

Jonny Mac is swapping out gear drives on his car to try and limit some of the power. They were spinning the tires all over the place and are hopping that this change will help them.

We caught up with John Leslie Jr before his Q1 run and he was a little worried about the clutch in his car. After looking at the data after his run, he will be keeping with the clutch and playing with the setup on his car for the next round.

Rick Riccardi has been the hardest working guy in the pits after Q1. His car broke a couple of valve springs and without the help of a team, Rick struggled to get the springs swapped, but he managed to get it fired up and tweak with the carb a little bit.
