NMRA Georgia 2008 Coverage - Saturday
It's Saturday morning here in Reynolds GA and so far, well, it's not looking good. Lots of rain and clouds. We are hoping it will clear up so we can make some qualifying and eliminations passes but only time will tell. Check back regularly throughout the day to see if the sun comes out.

Georgia has been called for the day -

The NMRA staff decided to call the day today as prevailing weather did not look like it was going to ease up. We believe they will finish Round 1 of Qualifying on Sunday Morning and move straight into eliminations.

What's Hot in Hot Street

The usual players have arrived in Hot Street in Reynolds, Georgia, but there is some major concern in the pits about the weather conditions. We're talking 3,500 feet of air and 65% humidity.

The Hot Street cars were in the lanes when the rain came so first round of qualifying was aborted. During test and tune, it was pretty ugly - the Hot Street cars on the whole where not making clean runs on Friday.

Will the early Booze domination continue? Will Demayo's peformances at the NMCA Bradenton event carry over into a serious challenge? Only the rain knows right now...

Update from SSO
John Urist - on a Mission in 2008

Coming off his hard fought win at the NMRA Bradenton Florida event, John Urist enters Reynolds with not only the points lead but the mental edge as well. His competitors watched and witnessed Urist with a brand new engine combination and chassis overcome some initial new car blues to walk through the field with consistent 7.50s.

Granted, he didn't lay down the nasty haymaker of a low 7.40 pass, but Urist has never been one to boast about low e.t.'s preferring to go rounds than end up in a cloud of smoke.

The team laid down a few test passes on Friday, but there was nothing that spectacular to right home about. He lifted on one pass, and his other best was a 7.78 lifting at only 148 mph, but the track was not in terrific shape during test and tune. One pass even resulted in a 1.53 60-foot.

Burton - Best run of Test & Tune

Don Burton is not satisfied with his second place finish in 2007 and he will do anything and everything to topple Urist for the SSO championship in 2008. The sick thing is that Urist and Manny are both equally nuts and focused on the championship. All three of these players would claw each other's eye's out for a win, but of course, with grace and class because, well, they're classy guys.

Don Burton was the class of test and tune, which doesn't mean anything, other than he dropped a 7.56 at 187 mph run on the SSO group that couldn't get down the track.

John McDonald

Since McDonald had a farm, he is right at home in Georgia. I walked around the pits yesterday and realized this guy might be a player in these upper ranks. He ran a nice 7.705 at 182 mph run.

Chris Burleson

Chris Burleson, another driver we haven't talked much about, also put together a nice package in test and tune with a 7.81 at 182. We gotta watch these new guys and see how they could influence the class.

Kolivas already counting the cash
Walking around the pits at Reynolds one thing became clear. Johnny "K" is counting his cash from BFGoodrich as the first drag radial racer to run 7's in Drag Radial trim.

Kolivas is one the nicest guys you could ever meet, well dressed and very easy to talk to. He's a georgia peach if I may say. But there is a danger in counting your cash or your chickens before it's won.

But why is he so confident?

Apparently as he does every season he has done a significant amount of testing before the start of the NMRA official racing year. Much of that testing was "apparently" done at Silver Dollar Raceway. This same track.

And the word is, Johnny K has gone fast as Reynolds. 7-seconds fast. Fast enough to go 7.80s. And just like Jim Blair did back in 2001 when he ran a 7.80 and shell shocked the Outlaw field, maybe Johnny is going to hammer first the drag radial field with a Blair-like 7.80.

Hazard Pay: Reynold's Motorcross Tower
We have to offer all of you a tremendous apology for the very slow coverage from our team at Reynolds, GA. We're working under some different conditions this year than we have had in the past in the Media RV.

As we all know, the tower at Silver Dollar Raceway isn't very big. Our team is working out of the Motorcross Tower at Reynolds which looks like it was abandoned long ago.

However, it is now inhabited by a wasp and bee community who has little need for internet access.

Because we have no internet access, we have to walk partially across the facility to connect to the internet to post results, and then back to the Wasp home.

Mike Murillo off to shaky start

Mike Murillo and his rear mounted twin turbo car has been having a tough time making a clean pass all weekend. After several shut down runs and some really rich and akward looking passes, hopefully the rain will give Mike and crew some time to figure out the tune up in this Mustang.

Steve Gifford Number 2 Qualifier

Steve Gifford was looking good in his Factory Stock mustang late Friday afternoon. Steve ran an 11.609 @ 119, which was the fastest mile an hour for the day in Factory Stock. Steve made a ton of passes yesterday, hopefully the team was able to get enough track info to make it work on Sunday.
