Tommy Godfrey was on a mission all weekend in Factory Stock. Last years champ was determined to make a move in the points at this race. He qualified #1 and would march through 4 rounds of competition taking out Matt Amrine in the finals with a 11.22 to Matt's 11.62
Another #1 qualifier who took it all the way to the finals. Ryan Hecox would run through the competition defeating Mark Anderson in the finals of Pure Street with a 10.23 to 10.53.
Bruce Hemminger would own Real Street this weekend. Qualifying #1 and running low et of ever round except in the semi's when his competition red lighted. Bruce would defeat Tim Matherly in the finals when Tim's mount would have problems and slow dramatically.
If you had to pick the winner this weekend in Drag Radial based on performance, it would have gone to Jason Lee after he ran an 8.12 in round 1 and an 8.17 in round 2. But defending world champion John Kolivas had Jason's performance on ignore. Kolivas would win going away with an 8.27 to Lee's slower 8.34.
Robbie Blankenship's Hot Street team showed up Friday morning at National Trails Raceway and promptly changed the motor before round 1 qualifying. They had used their spare engine at the NMCA race the weekend prior in Milan Michigan and wanted to put the best combination together for the weekends competition. They had just received their 'good' motor back from the dyno. Friday evening they'd change valve springs after a less than stellar run, an inevitable necessity with a high winding small block. Saturday they'd have problems with the cooling system, make a stall change on the converter all the while chasing the car which was making an odd move to the left at the hit. They finally broke into the mid 8.80's during the 3rd qualifying session to take the #3 spot. Round one would see the team pick up big time and run low et of the event with an 8.788. Robbie would meet Ben Mens in the finals. Everyone knew it would be a close race and it was! Blankenship would win at the tree and the stripe, out running Ben with an 8.81 to 8.83 with both cars running over 152 mph!
EFI Renegade would have a similar story line with Bob Cook breaking the transmission planetary in round 1 of qualifying, change the transmission over night and end up the #3 qualifier at the end of the day on Saturday. Bob would run through the field meeting Alton Clements in the final. Alton would take a slim lead at the launch but not have the power to out run Cook's mount loosing with and 8.85 to 8.64.
Super Street Outlaw was a David and Goliath final. Perry Santini gave it his best shot leaving on John Urist with a .012 to a .068. Urist would win it easily over the #9 qualifier with a 7.52 to a 9.53.
The battle of the titans would take place in the finals of Pro Outlaw 10.5. Dan Millen, who had struggled all weekend getting the car down the track would take on the example of perfection with Conrad Scarry. Dan knew he would have to take drastic steps to have a chance and he did. The team would make a dramatic decision to change the transmission before the finals. It would pay off with Dan running low et of the event and beating Conrad Scarry 6.84 to 7.03. The pair were close at the hit but Scarry's mount would wound what appeared to be the left turbo at half track when he started to trail blueish white smoke form the left side of the car.
