NMRA Bradenton 2009 - Friday Coverage
Ahh, Bradenton - my home track and the place to be this weekend if you are a Ford racer. The weather is awesome - high 70s and patchy clouds. We were here when the gates opened but a little behind on getting coverage, as we were shooting Mike Murrillo's SCT sponsored Mustang for an upcoming model shoot. Time to get rolling on the news.

Test and Tune News
Jerry Morgano wrecked is beautiful Pro 10.5 twin turbo Mustang. The car came up on the tires and made a hard left, spinning into the wall. Billy Driscoll did a fine job avoiding the crash and got around Morgano.

Chris Perry just pulled an 1/8th mile long wheel stand, landed, and spun the car in the middle of the track and luckily hit nothing. Those pictures will be up after a bit

News from the Pits

The SAM Racing School is back with their Hot Street combination. They missed half the season due to issues with the car. DeMayo Jr. was suppose to drive the car but due to back problems, was out and Tim Eichorn was in his place. They plan to run the car in both the NMRA and NMCA series, though there is still no set driver.

AJ Powell has his new and very beautiful Pro 10.5 car. As his Super Street car was, a Procharger remains the power adder of choice and has a gear drive setup. They finished the car Sunday night and made their way to Bradenton. First test hits yesterday netted a 1.14 60 foot and a 4.70 eighth-mile pass, lifting early. “As long as we can go from A to B, we will be happy”, AJ said.

Billy Driscoll brought out his very clean Super Street Outlaw Mustang. They had an apartment fire that caused them to cut the season short and kept all the racing local to the central Florida area. The combination is a 360 Nelson with a 94 MM turbo. The heavy car has been a best of a 7.79.

The surprising new car came from Don Bowles and the Roush camp. The Maverick is setup for Hot Street competition and has a Roush 396 naturally aspirated combination. The car was built over January and February and has not seen track testing prior to yesterday when the Maverick ran a 8.98 while spinning. The popular fad in the Roush camp is the marine pump that constantly rotates out cold water to drastically reduce engine temperatures between runs.

Pete Johnson has a new S197 Drag Radial car that they completely built in house over the course of four months. The 358 combination is driven by a Powerglide and ends up on a stock three link rear suspension. They tested the car for the first time Wednesday where they lost the hood on the first pass. By the fourth pass, the transmission gave out. The team finished replacing the broken transmission by 1 AM Thursday morning and then made the chase to Bradenton for today’s race

Bart Tobner built a new Renegade car for the simple fact of keeping weight out. The new chassis still has the modular combination from his old car and even some donated chassis parts, but weighs 140 pounds lighter. The build started January 12th and of course doesn’t have any runs on it.

Qualifying Round 1 Results
Qualifying round one was pretty tame today. Outside the few happenings from test and tune, qualifying went by without a hitch.

Mike Murillo and his twin turbo Mustang combination was the only Pro 10.5 car to make it in the 6 second barrier out of the six car field with a 6.857 @ 224.04 mph, followed by last years champ Conrad Scarry's 7.054 @ 209.64 mph. AJ Powell is suffering from the typical new car woes, with the S197 getting up on the bars during all test runs today.

Pro 10.5 driver Dan Millen doesn't have that famous turbo Mustang here to compete. Since the car is nearly eight years old, it is going through a series of chassis updates "In with the new hotness and out with the old and busted" Dan said. In an effort to keep the points going and to gain the "perfect attendance" record, Dan asked the folks at Obnoxious Motorsports for their Mustang to make some passes in. The Mustang is far from a Pro 10.5 car and is simply there to gather some points for Dan.

John MacDonald made the number one spot in Super Street Outlaw with a 7.625 @ 187.30. Multi-ring champ John Urist has had trouble getting down the track all day and currently sits at the end of the line after round one.

More Round 1 News

Hot Street champion Robbie Blankenship showed everyone why he has the number one on his car with a 8.634 @ 151.74. A three tenths spread covers top three competitors Max Gross and Roush engine builder Ben Mens.

Sean Lyon came out of no where with a 8.086 @ 177.23 blast to put him at the number one spot amongst the eleven cars in drag radial. Sean has the field by two tenths and will be a solid contender to keep the top spot. The other half of the drag radial class were fighting traction problems.

In Real Street, Jim Breese ran the exact same time as Dave Ginter with a 9.650, while Breese edged out with the mph by .69 with a net run of 141.11 mph.

Half a second covered first to ninth place in Real Street with Jimmy Wilson barely edging out Steve Gifford for the number one spot with a 10.362 @ 125.83 mph

Carlos Sobrino's four-eye might not be the best looking girl on the block, but it was the fastest one in Factory Stock with a 11.488 @ 116.51 mph

After Qualifying Pit Action

I didn't see Don Burton run during qualifying round one so I stopped by his pit, which earlier in the day had a plastic covering between the car and tent so you really couldn't see in. Not knowing, I walked past it to an engine-less Mustang and see Don reassembling his engine on a stand. Ring failure during a run on Thursday prompted the rebuild and should be ready to roll Saturday morning.

More bad luck in the Pete Johnson pit with yet another blown transmission. This makes two transmissions in three days. Neal's transmissions will be the choice for the rebuild with hopes of it holding up again tomorrow.

As we just said, Neal's Racing Transmissions was on hand to offer rebuilds for those who needed it. It looked like open heart surgery with sprags and clutches everywhere.

Here is a first-of-its-kind 4-valve custom valve cover by Bridge Racing that is significantly lighter than stock, and also looks blingin' with the nice welding job. Oh, and if you didn't know, Joey is having visa problems and is still stuck outside the USA, back in the land of kangaroos.
