The SAM Racing School is back with their Hot Street combination. They missed half the season due to issues with the car. DeMayo Jr. was suppose to drive the car but due to back problems, was out and Tim Eichorn was in his place. They plan to run the car in both the NMRA and NMCA series, though there is still no set driver.
AJ Powell has his new and very beautiful Pro 10.5 car. As his Super Street car was, a Procharger remains the power adder of choice and has a gear drive setup. They finished the car Sunday night and made their way to Bradenton. First test hits yesterday netted a 1.14 60 foot and a 4.70 eighth-mile pass, lifting early. “As long as we can go from A to B, we will be happy”, AJ said.
Billy Driscoll brought out his very clean Super Street Outlaw Mustang. They had an apartment fire that caused them to cut the season short and kept all the racing local to the central Florida area. The combination is a 360 Nelson with a 94 MM turbo. The heavy car has been a best of a 7.79.
The surprising new car came from Don Bowles and the Roush camp. The Maverick is setup for Hot Street competition and has a Roush 396 naturally aspirated combination. The car was built over January and February and has not seen track testing prior to yesterday when the Maverick ran a 8.98 while spinning. The popular fad in the Roush camp is the marine pump that constantly rotates out cold water to drastically reduce engine temperatures between runs.
Pete Johnson has a new S197 Drag Radial car that they completely built in house over the course of four months. The 358 combination is driven by a Powerglide and ends up on a stock three link rear suspension. They tested the car for the first time Wednesday where they lost the hood on the first pass. By the fourth pass, the transmission gave out. The team finished replacing the broken transmission by 1 AM Thursday morning and then made the chase to Bradenton for today’s race
Bart Tobner built a new Renegade car for the simple fact of keeping weight out. The new chassis still has the modular combination from his old car and even some donated chassis parts, but weighs 140 pounds lighter. The build started January 12th and of course doesn’t have any runs on it.
