| | | Thanks ya'll. Bobby, its not that I'm afraid to ask, its just that its hard to explain. I've often been on the receving end of those conversations that go something like "my car is making a rattling noise, whats wrong?"...and people will ask if they get the drift that you have even the slightest car knowledge haha. Basically the only way I know how to explain it, is I've replaced the distributor in the car 3 times...between 79k miles when I bought it and the current 117k. Now I will be honest and admit that I only bought piddly ones from discount auto parts, because I had no intentions of spending large amounts of money on a motor I didn't want to keep anyway. The last 2 were done within the year, and I got free replacements, so it didn't bother me to just keep the car going. With this last one, something has always been "funky". The car was down for about a year and a half, due to the fuel pump taking a crap. The stocker went out right after I bought the car in 2000, and before I knew much about it period. So I had a friend throw a slightly bigger Holley in there. Well that thing too bit the dust and by that time I knew what it needed. I purchased a Walboro 255lph and had a friend help install that about a year ago. We had to clean the tank out, change the plugs, the oil, grab a new battery, and several other minor things. Back to the "funky" part of the distributor, for the longest time if the car wouldn't start I could jiggle a wiring harness that goes into the dist. and then I could hear something prime, almost like when you turn the key forward and the fuel pump turns on, maybe it was the injectors priming? I really have no idea, but after a few months, jiggling that wire didn't work anymore, and I could get the car to turn over, and even almost get it to fire up if someone messed with the wire while I was turning the key forward, but it wouldn't full start or stay running. I know its a long drawn out explanation, but thats where I'm at haha.

| | | I admit, I am weak on wiring as well. But I know where to go to get the answers. Let me do some checking and see if this problem makes sense to anyone. I'll try and find some schematics that may help us understand why that problem would manifest itself in your distributor wires. I'm not sure that the fuel pump and distributor are on the same circuit, so I need to take a look at some wiring diagrams and ask a few questions of my Ford smarter friends.
I am sure that we have a few people in the StangTV community that will have some great ideas on troubleshooting this down.
Hang in there. Help is on the way. |

| | Haha yeah I'm not sure why it would manifest itself that way either...which played a part in my hesitation to explain. I know its hard to understand whats going on with someones car if you aren't there, seeing/hearing it yourself. But you make it as simple as ordering a burger...so transmission issue next? LOL

| | Replace the TFI Module (the little box on the distributor that the wires go into). It sounds like it's not making good contact with the distributor. Make sure you do a really good job of cleaning off the old gunk and apply the new grease that should come with the new module. You're going to need a 5.5mm distributor wrench, also. You can usually get those at any auto parts store.
They look like this -
or this - .
Good luck, Lauren. You know how to find me if you need more help..

StangGirl, told you we had some pretty savvy people on this forum. You might as well get your tranny problem out in the open now. Someone will have a fix for it. Easy as ordering a burger! Would you like fries with that? |

| | | No problem, Bobby. Had two of them fail on my old '86 GT, and two of them fail on my '86 Bronco. If I recall correctly, there was a class-action suit against Ford that originated in California about this very issue. Don't know what came of it, but I recall reading about it.
Lauren - changing the module should solve your problem. But stop buying cheap autoparts store electronics! You know better!

| | If my memory serves me correctly I already replaced the Module, and if its the one on the firewall, I also had it checked again about a year after replacing. However I could be getting this mixed up with something else. And as for the transmission issue, it makes me want to hit my head on a wall
Jason- Come by the parts for me and I won't have to!

Jason- Come by the parts for me and I won't have to! | I had a couple of them go bad within not too long of one another. Try using a Motorcraft piece rather than a parts-store bargain. :P
Buy the parts for you? I can't even buy parts for myself.....

I agree, stop buying that cheap stuff. Might as well go to the swap meet and by the bootlegged version.
