We've got a devine inspiration here at StangTV that was brought to us by a guy named Asif. His full name: Mohammad Asif ul Haq, and he hails from Bhaka, Bangladesh. Asif, like everyone else in the world, has a blog: iamasif
Why am I surfing a web site in India? Because Asif has made himself a Mustang cam. I watched this video and write-up of his little invention, and I thought, hell we could do a better job than Asif. But, here's his setup:
Asif: "You probably know that I'm a huge fan of the Ford Mustang. A couple of months ago my big bro gave me a cool remote control 1967 custom Shelby Mustang model. Since then I've been planning to make a video with it. What I wanted to do is to create a sort of carriage to attach the camera to the back of the ride, and then shoot the video while I control the car, which would give a NFS-like view. To hold the camera (Nokia 3250 in this case), I made something more like chariot, I named it 'Cam-Chariot', and attached it behind my Mustang. Now the only thing left was to drive it with the camera chasing it, and that's what I did."
Now, we thought, our intern Tom. The F-N-G, should be able to do a better job than a 22 year old kid in Bangladesh. Not that we have a problem with anyone in Bangladesh. It's just our 'ol USA pride. So we charged Tom with the responsibility of actually building a better MUSTANG CAM.
Tom has no idea where Bangaldesh was (or is). That's fine. I think that gives him a strategic advantage. Asif is probably a 22 year old Ph.D. that majored in aeronautical micro-biological engineering. Tom doesn't need to know, shouldn't need to know that. Just like any red white and blue beer-drinking American, all Tom needs to know is that he can win with enough effort, Coors Light, sweat equity, and red neck engineering.
The Plan:
Take:
• 1 High Grade Canon 850 Mini-DV Camcorder
• 1/24 Metal Mustang Model
• Add 1 1/18 scale High Speed Off-road Fully Suspension Mini R/C Losi Model
Mix them together as follows by the photos.
1/18 scale Losi vehicle. This will provide the power to tow our Mustang Model at high speeds, very drivable, and WAY American. It's off-road, too.
It's no Tundra.
At first, Tom thought, why not affix the Camera to the top of the Lexan truck. Well, that wouldn't make it a Mustang cam.
Scratched. Next idea.
Here's what FNG Tom came up with. Brilliant.
Rubber bands provide cushioning. Camera mounted on Mustang. Fully adjustable. Styrofoam offers crash protection.
Can this be patented?
Here's a beauty shot by Mark Gearhart before we attached our Losi truck:
Here's our Mustang cam. See what you think. We think we kicked Asif's butt, but you can be the judge. Yes, the video is cheezy.
