Whether its memories of racing at a dragstrip or just listening to stories form your elders it seems that everyone has a dragstrip that was close to them that has been closed. There are strips all over the country that have been forgotten about and it is our intention to bring back the good ole days.
Our first track is Detroit Dragway. Known as the Dirty "D" it was established in 1959 by Gil Kohn. Upon opening the NHRA quickly sanctioned the track and hosted the prestigious U.S. Nationals there in 1959 and 1960. During its almost 40 years of history Detroit had been sanctioned under the AHRA,UHRA and NHRA.
Greats like "Big Daddy" Don Garlits and Connie Kalitta graced the 1320 at Detroit Dragway which hosted many big money match races throughout the 1960's. The 1970's came and went by way to fast for the famed strip but in its day it held a Summer Nationals race with the NHRA over three days with over 30,000 people attending. In the 80's Detroit started to see the demise that many others have with crowds dwindling down to nothing and continued up until 1991 when Ed Law was commissioned to restore the facility. In 1994 the NHRA had plans to erect a huge stadium type track for national events. The plans were shot down by locals and politicians. Detroit Dragway officially closed the gates in 1998.
