We stumbled upon a proposed bill titled
“High Powered Vehicles Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2009” which was allegedly introduced to congress last month. The bill was the street racing equivalent to solving domestic violence by outlawing kitchen knifes.
The bill has surfaced on enthusiast forums such as
Zilvia.net,
TurboBuick.com, and others -- would basically
outlaw any vehicle which was designed with over 150 hp, and any aftermarket modifications up to and including decals and graphics! Obviously anyone whose reading this site would be outraged by this, ridiculous idea. We started thinking this is so ridiculous is it even true?
We started by doing a Yahoo search, and found recurrences of this on several forums, but nothing official.
We then searched a few government websites, but didn’t find anything. However who knows how quick they will post new proposals. All of that led us to contact the experts at SEMA, who serve as the watch dogs for automotive enthusiast.
We were able to contact Jason Tolleson of
SEMA Political Action Committee. He was very helpful, first because he has assured me they have not heard about the bill. Second, he caught a very subtle slip by the author of the alleged proposal, citing that this was part of the 115th congress, even though the 111th congress has yet to be sworn in.
So it appears as though this was just a hoax, by someone who obviously has entirely to much time on their hands. So what if some congressional quack actually tries to put forth a bill like this? “Rest assured SEMA is closely watching all activities on Capitol Hill and will get the word out on any hobby/aftermarket industry-related legislation.” according to Jason.
Thanks to SEMA, we have a watchdog on our side. Please support the
SEMA Political Action Committee and make sure to let SEMA know how much they mean to you.
