HELP NEEDED @@ Fuel Pump upgrade vs Boost a Pump for a 2004 Cobra
I have a friend with a 2004 Cobra and he is upgrading his supercharger to a Kenne Bell. Kenne is trying to sell him the boost a pump, but I'm convinced that a larger fuel pump that can flow more volume is a much better idea that increasing voltage to the pump.

Can anyone give me some advice or input as to what the options are and whether they've ever used the Kenne Bell BAP?

Thanks
Rob

Hey Rob,
My gut reaction is the same as yours. More volume will probably be a better and more efficient long term fix. I would suspect higher pump failure rate and perhaps other inconsistencies from the voltage increase and demand.

In all fairness, I have not done any research on this particular item, but I will try and look into it for you.

I had a Kenne Bell Boost a Pump (BAP) on my 2003 SVT Cobra with a ported blower making about 500 rwhp and was very happy with it. There are literally thousands of Cobra owners using BAP's without a problem who are very happy with them. The other option is the dual SVT Focus fuel pumps.

Here's a few things to read:

Kenne Bell BAP vs. SVT Focus Pumps

Kenne Bell BAP Information

I think you can use BOTH of them in really high HP applications.

I agree, that BAP may be a good solution to deliver more fuel for now. But I would think in the long run you may want to have a fuel pump that does what it is supposed to do. I am sure you can find a great pump. Maybe Aeromotive might be able to answer this topic correctly. Either way, I think the BAP or a new pump will solve the question. Just depends on how much time or money you have.

Well I'm a 2003 Cobra owner and I think having the boost a pump helps in various ways.
My Snake has a Whipple Supercharger with every other piece that can go on my 4.6 motor and it made all day long 678 RWHP @ 681 RWTQ @ 24 pounds of boost. With that being said I was advised even by Whipple to get get a Kenne Bell BAP, what this allows is your tuner to dial in the correct voltage to to the fuel pump to make it spin faster delivering the correct amount of fuel & that helps the tuner tune your car & not melt pistons. Your snake with the extra power is going to need this extra bump in fuel pump speed to accommodate the amount of air that your pulling in trough your blower.
Now I've heard that you can replace the pumps with Ford GT pumps That is The Ford Gt-40 pumps. I think they cost about $120 each and you will need 2 of them & thats if you want to go the "replace the fuel pumps route".
Now depending on how sick your going to get with the Horse Power anything over 675 RWHP It would be advisable to do the rest of the fuel system such as the fuel rails, & not such a bad idea since you will have the blower off. Also upgrading to 1/2 inch fuel lines as well with a set of 65 pound injectors or bigger depending on the application is also not a bad Idea.
Me myself I'm putting cams with some head porting with 24 pounds of boost I know for sure I will be making 725+ RWHP and upgrading the whole fuel system is a must. Now if your looking for a great system well Aeromotive make a kit
Ford 4.6 L DOHC A1000 Fuel System, P/N 17145

All & all I've had nothing but good luck with the BAP and highly recommend it to any Cobra owner but just don't forget, the more power with elevated boost levels like 19-25 pounds your are going to need to take your Snake to a chassis dyno tuner so he can properly tune your car with the correct level of octane depending on the boost level.
I hope this helped you out in some way. Feel free to ask any other Questions but if you have a local DYNO Chassis tuner that you can trust or comes highly recommended I would at least have a chat with him as well for suggestions as well.

Good Luck

My Snake with my Whipple but since that pic I added a JLT intake and I picked up all sorts of extra power!!
Another good buy!!

Fool Fire, I think your research is probably led you to the same conclusion as mine has. There is about a 50/50 split on the Kenne Bell. For every good thing you hear, there's one against. I have no dog in this fight. Don't know anyone from Kenne Bell and I don't do any business with them. Have never bought or installed any pumps from them. So I guess that makes me ill-equipped to make a definitive statement on how good or bad they are. But....I, much like you, have a pretty decent background in engineering and I stand by my orginal gut feel. More volume. Obviously the choice is yours, but I would go with what your head and heart tell you is right.
