Ford Mustang to Return to Pro Stock with Jim Cunningham behind the Wheel
Every since the day's of Bob Glidden, Ford fans everywhere have longed to see a Ford to return to competitive Pro Stock contention. One man shares that dream - Jim Cunningham.

Jim Cunningham and his Ford Pro Stock team are returning to competition in Atlanta for this weekend's Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals with a new engine combination in their Ford Mustang entry and manufacturing partner.

“The guys in the shop have been working 14-16 hour days, seven days a week since October and we have made some real gains with our engine program,” said Cunningham. “We have finished two engines and are working on three more. These engines represent a large increase in horsepower and rpm capability and we are looking forward to the race this weekend in Commerce because it will give us a real good idea of where we are in relation to our competition. We are dedicated to producing a race winning combination for our Mustang.

“We have added CNC Software Inc., of Tolland, Conn., and their signature program, Mastercam, as a major manufacturing partner, and we are really excited about the expanded capabilities this partnership will produce. With Mastercam we can take a concept and then design, produce a toolpath, and machine the part in as little as a day, depending on the complexity. This has proven to be one of our best decisions and we are absolutely ecstatic that Mastercam has decided to expand their relationship with us.”

It wasn't so long ago that Jim Cunningham was on the wrong side of his race car. Previously, as captured in these photos from Competition Plus, he had crashed his Ford Escort in NHRA Pro Stock competition in 2006. But, he's back and with some better funding and support, looking to step up and really be a player in Pro Stock.

After watching Jim discount information that Bob Glidden gave him at an NHRA event years ago (back when Jim had the Escort and Bob was tuning for Jeggie) I have very serious doubts about him ever qualifying for an NHRA Pro Stock field.

I would be ever so happy if it would happen but I don't believe it will. I would also jump for joy if Ford would put even a miniscule amount of John Force's budget into a Pro Stock team. That won't happen either, unfortunately.

Jim's car sure looks good though.

Doesn't a Ford in Pro Stock mean essentially nothing considering the cylinder heads and blocks are all generally copies of each other. Isn't it just a body?

Maybe Force will back a Pro Stock team some day as he builds out his empire.

As for the blocks and heads issue - what I've heard is that the Ford head is pretty much exactly the same as the GM head now.
