Ford Continues to Back Drifting with 2010 Mustang Update
With the big three in economic turmoil, racecar sponsorships have been dramatically cut in all forms of racing. Ford has opted to continue to support drifting with their poster child and D1 Grand Prix world champion, Vaughn Gittin Jr.
Every year, the majority of race teams come out with fresh cars to compete in the Formula Drift season. Vaughn’s current S197 Mustang is old by drifting car standards. The car shows it’s age with permanently tweaked chassis – taillights and bumpers just don’t align like they use to.
Vaughn and his Falken Tires backed Mustang started their full-time campaign during the 2005 Formula Drift series. The original 4.6-liter modular combination was built by XMP and used a Vortech supercharger to help boost the power. The team started to fall into a plague of engine problems. In 2006, the engine was completely re worked to a high revving, naturally aspirated modular combination that sports individual throttle bodies with top mount injectors, resembling a F1 car, that was developed by Bosch.
The all-new 2010 Mustang is a tamer appearing version that is missing the typical blue and green Falken paint scheme. The engine is stays a 4.6-liter modular combination, but this time wih a roots style supercharger. The body is all dry carbon with access points for quick removal for changing out damaged panels at the track.
The interior has a limited amount of gauges. Additional amenities include a classic Sparco steering wheel, Motec engine management, switch panel and one clean interior layout. Look for Falken/Ford Mustang to make an appearance in the 2009 Formula Drift series.
