On the 40th anniversary of the 1968 Cobra Jet Mustangs, the first drag-race ready Mustang FR500CJ rolled off of the ROUSH assembly lines in Livonia, MI. Brian Wolfe, Director of Ford Racing Technology, handed the set of keys over to the first owner of the 5.4 liter supercharged Mustang, Brent Hajek. Brent will be fielding four FR500CJ Mustangs at the 2009 Winter Nationals in Pomona, CA this coming February. These Mustangs come ready to run the quarter-mile in 10 seconds or less off the production line, and it is the drag-race equivalent of the Mustang FR500S.
The Mustang FR500CJ comes with a 6-speed manual transmission or a 3-speed automatic, a 9” rear end, long tube headers, and numerous suspension upgrades, such as adjustable dampers and drag race springs to help put the power to the ground.
The car comes from the factory with about 400 horsepower and his an MSRP of about $70,000, around the same as the FR500S. Only 50 2008 Mustang FR500CJs will be built, and most will be delivered in February – of course, if you’re thinking of doing anything but racing this car, think again, as the FR500CJ is serialized but does not come with a VIN number, meaning it is for off-road use only. Also the car only comes in one color scheme, red white and blue, and with comes packaged with some pretty gaudy Cobra graphics But turn-key tens? Sign me up.
