A lot has changed in this country in the past forty years, and for many movements 1969 was the peak before the recession. The moon landing, the counter-culture movement, and of course the most recognizable names of muscle car lore roamed the streets from Washington to San Francisco. Chevelle. GTO. Charger. Torino. My father told me you couldn’t turn a corner without seeing a rumbling V8 and burnt rubber scorched every stop light. Now you pretty much have to go to a car show to see most of these discontinued nameplates, but a new era of muscle cars is dawning, just as the economy has taken a mighty downturn.
But the Big Three, despite serious financial problems, are soldering on with their production cars even as companies like Honda and Toyota are killing rear-wheel drive and V8 projects. 2010 is a historic year for the second coming of muscle cars, and two important parts of that history will be auctioned off at Barrett-Jackson this January. Both the first 2010 Mustang GT and the Shelby GT500 are up for auction, with the refreshed pony car gaining edgier styling and a more aggressive look. Both the GT and GT500 gain substantial horsepower via a redesigned cold air intake system, 15 and 40 ponies respectively. The interior has also received a much improved interior which receives real brushed aluminum and an all new dashboard. The proceeds from the auction will all go to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The auction runs from January 13th to the 18th in Scottsdale, AZ.
