Big Dog, welcome to the site. That project sounds totally kick ass. A '66 with a 5.4L should be a monster. I know you're going to have Hood clearance issues.

I would suggest calling D&D Performance - Don Walsh, from Michigan. You'll probably want a T56 transmission behind that 5.4L, or possibly a T6060. I don't know what will fit into the '66, but Don will know.

T56 will be pricey,.. upwards of $2000 - $2500 for everything (Doing it yourself). But if you have the cheddar then by all means,.. it would be the cats meow of a tranny for that car.

If the car is mainly street driven for shows or cruising around with some track time then a T45 or 3650 5 spd will more then suffice. Both can be had for $700 or under,.. most used T45's in good shape sell between $300 - $500. I have one for sale myself. Needs a synchro kit though. T45 and 3650 are both cable actuated from the clutch quadrant. If not mistaken a T6060 uses a hydraulic clutch. May have complications getting proper clutch and pedal height adjustment depending on flywheel thickness because the slave may need to be shimmed. The 03/04 Cobra spec T56 or any T45 or 3650 would greatly simplify clutch adjustments and pedal feel.

All 4.6/5.4 blocks have the same tranny bolt pattern. The V10 also shares the same bolt pattern. Only the early 93 2v 4.6 had the SBF bolt pattern. After that they all share the common modular bolt pattern.

With a manual tranny there will be no computer adjustments. Doesnt matter which computer you have,.. whether for an automatic or manual tranny. You can edit out the automatic tune as easily as you can the rear O2's unless your running a stock 4.6 exhaust. If running an off road exhaust will need to edit out the rear O2's or purchase MIL Eliminator's ($50 tops). They plug in between the harness and rear O2's. Sending the correct signal to the computer as if the cats were there.

Sounds like you have the jist of most everything. Stuffing a 4.6/5.4 into a 66 Mustang is a task in itself. I've seen it in a 68 and it was a tight fit in there. T45 and 3650 are plenty stout. Stronger then a T5,.. and plenty for a mild 12 second car. I ran 11's on mine,.. worst problem I have now is bad synchro's from power shifting. 2nd grinds at high RPM.

I can agree, the T56 is a very expensive trans. For a budget build, not a very good choice.
