Judging by the way things look, engineer’s at Ford have been hard at work on the Mustang platform for the 2011 model year. The 2010 has received great reviews and the 2011 is headed in the right direction, starting at the base model V6. Chevrolet’s Camaro has proven to be a strong runner with its six cylinder powerplant and Ford has countered with a offensive of their own.

Starting in 2011, Ford will replace the tried and true 4.0-liter V6 for a new 3.7-liter V6 that is a high revving 24 valve DOHC engine. Ford was showing off their new war horse at a employee town hall event at the Dearborn Development Center last week. Many Ford personalities showed up to check out what has been going on behind the scenes. John Force and his entire crew were on hand as well. Final numbers have not been placed in concrete as of yet but the Lincoln MKS would be a good judge of character for what the V6 will be capable of.

The Duratec that is going in the Mustang is a duplicate of what resides in the Lincoln MKS has already produced 273 horsepower and 270 lb-ft. of torque from its all aluminum base. Up from a mere 210 horsepower, the 3.7 should be a breath of fresh air for Mustang enthusiasts that are looking for a little less than the V8 has to offer but still desire throttle response on the freeway. We can only hope that with a well reception by the public, there will be a high horsepower twin turbo version heading out of the Ford stables real soon.
