Cars like the Mustang hold a special cultural significance as a part of the American identity. For over 40 years the Mustang has roamed American streets, a testament to our automotive engineering and styling skills. Along with this identity comes certain perks, like being immortalized in toy form. Ahead of the 2010 Mustang's actual production release and hot on the heels of the LA Auto Show's unveiling come two new toys based around the 2010 Mustang.
First there is the iconic Hot Wheels brand of car miniatures, which has been reproducing Ford products for over 40 years themselves, one of the first models they released having been a Redline Custom Mustang. The model is 1/64 though there is much more that goes into producing a Mustang model than just shrinking the car down. For example, the wheels on the model are actually much bigger than the rims on the production Mustang, allowing the car to tackle loops much easier, although in real life the model's rims would be between 25 and 28 inches, significantly bigger than the 18" rims offered on the real 'Stang. The model also lacks side view mirrors, which pose a safety risk to young children. These would make a great stocking stuffer for any age. I know I still have my very first Hot Wheels and I cherished each one I got.
However if you are looking for something slightly more mature, Maisto may make the model for you. Their 1:18 diecast scale model features many of the details on the 2010 Mustang, including a true dual exhaust, the new cold air intake system, and separate seat belts to add to the realism. This amazingly detailed model can be had for under $30 as well, making it a real bargain for the attention to detail you get.
