We dropped by Jay Leno’s Garage booth at the SEMA show to see what car care products the team had brought to the after market automotive’s largest trade show of the year. Chris Walters, the Marketing Director for the company, mentioned a bottled “drying aid.” Intrigued by the prospect of a drying aid in a bottle, we asked the question: “What is a drying aid?”
“This is a new detailing product category that has emerged in recent years,” said Walters. “These ‘drying aids’ are becoming more and more popular,” he added. Representing a new advancement in detailing technology, these drying aids are a product that is applied to assist with the manual towel-drying process of a vehicle. Again we asked the obvious question: “Why do you need a drying aid to help towel-dry your car?”
“Something that is critical to understand in the detailing process is that any time you physically touch your vehicle’s paint, you have the potential to scratch, swirl or mar the surface,” replied Walters. ” It doesn’t matter if you touch the paint with your fingers, hands, towels, mitts, dusters, or cloths, you run that risk. Because of that, we want to lubricate whatever tool as much or possible. You lubricate your wash mitt with soap and water during the wash process, and now you can lubricate your drying towel as you dry.”
Basically, using a drying aid is simply an additional measure of protection that helps prevent dreaded swirl marks while drying your car, and cheap insurance to help protect your paint.
