Today in Las Vegas at The SEMA Show, Ford Performance announced two significant additions to its lineup. One is a new Mustang racer designed for competition in road racing series across the globe. The other is a powerful track datalogging and video capture app that runs on the smartphone in your pocket.

The new Ford Performance Mustang GT4 features numerous aerodynamic improvements, including a rear wing, aggressive splitter, additional hood venting and new rear diffuser, which all contribute to increased downforce.

The latter is a powerful app that works with Ford’s Sync3 infotainment system to combine performance data with track overlays, lap times, and on-screen virtual gauges. Better yet you can share this combined video from your phone so your friends know just how well you did at the racetrack.

“Ford Performance wants to provide our customers a simple, shareable way to capture their track exploits,” says Dave Pericak, global director, Ford Performance. “The ability to take their track sessions with them everywhere they go and easily share their footage and data with friends is a huge benefit of our new app.”

The Ford Performance Mustang GT4 features a motorsports engine control, an antilock-braking controller, and a Motec dashlogger. Inside, it is upgraded with an FIA-compliant roll cage.

The app uses the camera right in your phone to record the video, then overlays that imagery with performance data provided by Sync 3 from your car’s onboard computer. The data recorded by the app can be downloaded to a computer for serious analysis or uploaded to various social networks for those online bragging rights.

The Ford Performance App will launch in 2017 with the new Ford GT and eventually other Ford vehicles will be able to take advantage of this technology.

The Mustang GT4

One vehicle that would definitely be worthy of documenting your on-track performance is the new Mustang GT4 turnkey racecar, which also debuted at the show today.

Launching with the Ford GT next year, the Ford Performance app will allow users to combined powerful onboard datalogging with smartphone video for both fun and data analysis.

“The new Mustang is a global vehicle,” Mark Rushbrook, motorsports engineering manager, Ford Performance, said. “Now, its growing fan base has a GT4 competition model to race and support around the globe.”

Based on the highly successful Shelby GT350R-C, the new Mustang GT4 is designed to compete in the Grand Sport class of sanctions including the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge, Pirelli World Challenge GTS and European GT4.

It is powered by a 5.2-liter engine and backed by a six-speed Holinger paddle-shift transmission. It features revised suspension tuned by Multimatic Motorsports with new dampers, revised lower rear control arms and tuned stabilizer bars. It rolls on 18×11-inch Forgeline wheels with racing slicks.

No word yet on when the Mustang GT4 will first hit the track, but its performance should definitely be worthy of sharing via the Ford Performance App.
