PRI 2016: Watson Racing Coyote Race Block & Ported Voodoo Heads

Watson Racing now offers ported Voodoo heads for modern 5.0- and 5.2-liter Ford engines as well as a race-prepped Coyote block.

Watson Racing and quick 2015+ Mustangs go hand in hand. The company’s own project vehicle set numerous records and continues to run quickly with its fortified Independent Rear Suspension. Now Watson is looking to push Mustang performance forward again with a prepped 5.2-liter block and ported Voodoo cylinder heads.

The heads are the same units run on the storied Shelby GT350’s 5.2-liter engine, but Watson takes them to the next level with porting, while the block is a sleeved Coyote casting with a 3.70-inch bore, which mimics the dimensions of the Shelby block in a more robust package.

“This is the Voodoo-based cylinder head,” Kim Mapes, Tuning Specialist at Watson Racing told us. “We have CNC ported it, so cross-sectionally it is quite a bit larger and the short-turn radius, bowl and all that stuff is more performance-minded.”

Watson’s ported Voodoo heads are said to be good for a 100-horsepower gain on a Coyote engine.

By starting with Ford’s best cylinder head in the Coyote lineage, Watson’s porting magicians are able to create even more flow and power.

“The valve spacing is different on this head (versus the Coyote and the Boss),” Kim added. “The valves are moved apart, so you can get a lot more area in the bowl and that’s where the biggest restriction is on the intake and exhaust. The casting alone, even before porting, is much better than the regular Coyote head.”

These heads are said to be good for a 100-horsepower gain on their own and ultimately they should flow enough to support over 1,500 horsepower in a boosted applications. Making that much power, however, will require a more robust block, so Watson has also developed its Race-Prepped Coyote Block.

“It’s got Darton sleeves in it,” Kim said. “It’s filled with an epoxy formula that we’ve been playing with to support the cylinders. It really does pretty much eliminate the problem we have with keeping the cylinders round in these blocks.”

The Race-Prepped blocks are line-honed, stuffed with Darton sleeves and screwed together with quality ARP fasteners. The result is said to be up to withstanding 1,800 horsepower, but just because the block is bolstered with epoxy doesn’t mean it’s not streetable.

The company’s sleeved and epoxied Coyote block is touted to withstand up to 1,800 horsepower.

“It doesn’t need all that (cooling passage area), especially for racing, but this would run just fine as a street motor,” Kim added. “It has an inch of water in the top so it would still run as a street motor.”

So combining these new offerings with a power adder might just result in streetable, 1,500-horsepower Mustangs thundering down the boulevard. If you are so inclined, the heads will set you back $5,900, while the block will run $7,900.
