If you race your vintage Mustang on the road course, you need a greater range of adjustment from your car’s hardware, particularly the suspension. However, when you lower your car for better handling, that affects the steering geometry, which is why Flaming River developed its Road Race Power Rack & Pinion system for classic Mustangs.

“This is a bolt-on rack and pinion kit for the ’65-’70 Mustang, which is our road race rack system,” Ron Domin of Flaming River explained. “It bolts into where the steering box holes and idler arm holes are and it has a travel bar design that hooks to the rack and pinion. We supply the inner ends and they use their factory outer ends.”

Because lowering the car changes all the suspension geometry, you need more adjustment from the steering system and Flaming River achieves that with the new cradle that mounts its quick-ratio rack, which offers only 2 ¾ turns of the steering wheel lock to lock. In this new mount the steering angles can be tweaked to compensate for various ride heights.

“What this does is maintain the geometry of the car that’s adjustable for all the different ride heights that are out there on these road-course cars,” Ron said. “They can raise or lower the travel bar and raise or lower the inner ends and make it to their liking.”
