SCAT Enterprises Inc, the Redondo Beach, California company that has earned its place as one of the most respected and innovative manufacturing companies in the automotive aftermarket, unveiled a few new surprises at this year’s PRI tradeshow in Indianapolis. The latest crankshaft tricks from the manufacturer range from a line of budget Chevy Sprint car cranks and a lighter weight 4.6 Ford stroker crank, to a SBC crankshaft with a BBC snout.
The popularity of the budget 305 iron block sprint car racing prompted SCAT to produce a crankshaft dedicated specifically to this class. Part of the RaceSaver series of crankshafts from the manufacturer, SCAT’s Brian McCullough said, “We offer them in cast iron or forged steel. The cast is around $250 and the forged is $660, so they’re affordable to racers in this budget class.” Keeping racers on the track and racing is one of the areas where SCAT Enterprises has always enjoyed a great reputation in racing circles.
The Chevy 305 Sprint camshafts are offered in stock stroke and stock connecting rod pin diameter, with internal balance for two-piece rear main seal. For the one-piece rear seal it is offered in internal balance or external rear balance versions. Both crankshaft weigh in at 48 pounds. The standard improvements in SCAT’s high performance crankshafts are incorporated in these new RaceSaver Sprint cranks. The oil passageways are straight shot with chamfered oil holes. The connecting rod journals have large radius for race bearings and all rod journals have drilled lightening holes to help reduce weight where practical.
The 4.6 Ford stroker crankshaft has gun drilled main journals, making it a perfect fit for the grass roots racer. “By gun drilling the mains, it makes the crank lighter and lets the crankcase breathe a little better,” said McCullough. “We also offer this crank in a kit with 5.850-inch rod and Ross piston.”
The other Chevy crankshaft new to this year’s SCAT line is a small block Chevy crankshaft with a larger big block Chevy crankshaft snout. McCullough explained where this crankshaft would shine, “They’re built for users driving something off the crank, like a supercharger,” he said. “You can get them in one of three rod journal sizes: 2.100-inch, 2.000-inch and Honda sized 1.888-inch and either a 350 or 400 main journal size.”
