2015 may be right around the corner, but that doesn’t mean 2014 is finished with big news for the automotive aftermarket. At this year’s PRI, we caught up with Air Flow Research to get a taste of what’s fresh and interesting, and we weren’t disappointed when they showed us their new big block Ford cylinder heads.

On hand to speak with us was Chris Sperling, who was able to share some of the nitty-gritty details about these particular products. “This cylinder head is a standard Cobra Jet replacement,” he said. “We just got back from doing dyno testing on these heads, and we’re excited to share that we achieved 80 more horsepower over SCJ units.”

AFR didn’t stop there, however. Sperling confirmed that testing covered competitor’s heads too, and the company saw gains of 30-40 horsepower over these rival offerings. “And that was just the entry-level 270cc version,” he said. “We have plans to introduce two new 285cc versions, one with standard exhaust height and one with .250-inch raised exhaust. There will also be 300cc versions, one with .250-inch raised exhaust, and one with .625-inch raised exhaust.”

This is all well and good for the Ford purists who will be using licensed components to complete the build, but for those who would rather opt for simplicity and cost efficiency, AFR will soon have these folks covered as well. “We’ll soon introduce a Chevy-style exhaust for these heads, allowing users to bolt up Chevy headers to the big block Ford cylinder heads,” said Sperling. “There may be a little chassis modification necessary, but for the most part, this should be an easy bolt-in installation.”

The company’s CNC-porting machines are working overtime on these bad boys, with both intake and exhaust ports along with the combustion chambers receiving the full treatment designed to promote consistency and repeatability on the street and at the track.
