PRI 2011: Mike Moran’s Twin Turbo Mustang Pro Mod

It is one thing to watch the progress of a vehicle build unfold online, it’s something else to see a piece of automotive art when it’s still fresh, before it makes its first passes down the track. This is the case for Mike Moran’s twin turbo Pro Mod Mustang; it’s simply a work of art.

The body was based of Ford’s Pro Stock platform and has been modified for Pro Mod-type racing. The body that you see here features a significantly reduced frontal area with a lower grille, shrunken wheel wells, a lowered roof line, enlarged quarter panels and rear glass to accommodate a massive 36″ tire, and a reshaped rear bumper area for improved air diffusion.

We basically created (a custom engine), the best of a Ford, a Chevy, a Chrysler, and everything I’ve learned in my 25-plus years of building engines.

“To be honest, it was mostly my partner, Bart Lemieux, that turned me onto the Pro Stock Mustang body,” said Mike Moran. “He kept suggesting that we go with the Ford and I told him that we’d have to do a lot of work to get a body where we wanted it.”

Larry Larson at Larson Race Cars took the body and built the double frame rail chassis around it, using the latest technology Larson has learned throughout the years building Pro Street/Mod-style vehicles.  While Moran is working on his own billet engine combinations that uses a host of engine features from the big three wrapped into one, it is not done yet.

“We’re building a new HEMI-based engine that has a lot of our own ideas incorporated into it,” says Moran “I’ve been working with Danny Jesel and Charlie Weston to develop a whole new block platform that uses, what we feel, is some pretty innovative thinking. It’s been designed strictly for turbocharged alcohol, so it’s going to be really easy to maintain. We basically created the best of a Ford, a Chevy, a Chrysler, and everything I’ve learned in my 25-plus years of building engines.”
