There are rare Mustangs, and then there are rare Saleen Mustangs. Many specialty Saleen models number in the single digits, and some are so rare not many people know about them, and even fewer know what they’re looking at.

Case in point is Robert Landry’s ’07 Saleen S281. “I don’t even know if there were 10 cars painted this color,” Landry says about his BASF Extreme Rainbow S281. We spotted Landry and his car at the Fab Fords Forever Show a few weeks ago. The car was originally ordered by another gentleman, but when the car was ready, Saleen couldn’t track down the guy. Saleen checked out the credit card the gentleman originally used to order the car, and it was no longer active. Therefore, the car ended up at Sunset Ford in Westminster, California.

You don’t see many Saleens equipped with automatic transmissions. Makes Landry’s example even more rare.

Landry bought the car on his birthday in April of 2008. He was looking for a stick car, and this one is an automatic, but knowing how rare the car was, Landry bought it anyway. Saleen did these cars right by removing the engine and painting the engine bay body color. However, the cam covers were left silver. Recently, Landry had the cam covers, radiator cover, fuse box cover, and brake booster cover all painted body color. All Magic Paint and Body in Narco, CA handled the color-matching and application.

The Saleen has just 12,000 miles on it as if this writing, and Landry hasn’t been afraid to modify the car from a powertrain standpoint, either. He didn’t want to too much to the car, but “I did put JBA headers and an X-pipe on the car, along with a Hillbank air intake. That really woke it up,” Landry says. The engine already had a Saleen supercharger on it, which benefited from the intake and exhaust modifications. Dale Earnhardt black chrome wheels and Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tires.

We all know Saleen’s specialty is handling, so not much was needed there. “All I did was replace the rear sway bar, and upgrade the lower control arms,” Landry says. He also added Dale Earnhardt black chrome wheels with Dunlop SP Sport Maxx tires.

This Saleen is not Landry’s first, and he also owns an ’03 GT with a Vortech supercharger that serves as the Saleen’s stablemate.
