It’s no secret to late model Ford fans that the 5.0 Coyote platform is a serious performer, and parts have been flying off the shelves since it debuted for the 2011 model year. You need a way to get all those shiny new parts home, right?
Enter, Charlie Cooper and his one of a kind 2011 F-150, featuring a ROUSH supercharger. With the help of his uncle Henry, a fellow Ford fanatic and gearhead, they set out to send the 4,700 pound truck down the quarter mile in a hurry.
They started in October 2011, with a brand spanking new 2011 F-150, and started early with bolt on parts including intake, exhaust, and the tuning to take advantage of it. This took Charlie across the finish with a respectable 12.90, but it just wasn’t enough.
That’s when Charlie contacted Johnny Lightning Performance of New Providence PA. The cure for the go fast blues? A ROUSH supercharger kit, complete with everything Charlie needed to take his truck to the next level. ROUSH offers the kit as a complete package, meaning no trips to the parts store, no waiting for back ordered “optional” parts, and NO regrets.
With an install time of around 10 hours, the kit can be on and tuned in a weekend, and it reuses the stock components, which means you won’t be left on the side of the road looking for a hard to find fuel pump or other wear parts. You “pay to play” as the expression goes, and the only downside to the kit is, as you might expect, it voids the factory engine warranty and isn’t approved for CA use.
To see the fruits of his labor, Charlie took the newly tweaked truck out to Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton, Florida for the NMRA’s 2012 season opener. With some less than favorable weather conditions, he squealed out a solid 11.85 in the quarter mile during Friday’s test and tune session. A gut feeling told Charlie he could push it farther, so between runs he swapped out the stock 9 psi pulley for an optional 11 psi unit.
The additional atmosphere helped churn out over 600 rwhp, propelling the beast across the beams to an astonishing 11.37 at 117mph. Let me put that in perspective for some of you; this is an over two ton truck, which can speed down the 1320 faster than a Porsche 911 GT2. Sweetening the deal even further, Charlie reports averaging between 16-18mpg, nearly 6mpg better than 5.4L Lariat he drives daily!
So what is next for Mr. Cooper and his badass ‘One-Fiddy? He’s confident that the setup has room to grow, and plans to experiment with the tuning and pulley sizes to see where the ragged edge is. He also plans to add an aftermarket stall converter to aid putting all that power to the ground, with hopes to take an additional two tenths off his already impressive time. With spring rapidly approaching, we hope to see Charlie out at the strip again, still pushing the limits of big Coyote power.
Best part of the story? It was driven 1,000 miles there, and 1,000 miles back.
