Mustang Week: Tuesday’s Top Fives From The StangTV Staff

Mustang Week revelers lined up early and pretty much all day to sign up and register. We were blown away by the sheer number of cars here. If you weren’t here early you weren’t parking at the Palace.

We brought you news of yesterday’s pre-Mustang Week festivities, but today was the official first day of the captivating event held in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Mustang Week, hence the name, is a week long event with various small shows taking place everyday. Today’s venue was the Palace Theatre for the Meet and Greet.

Michael Johnson’s Top 5 For Tuesday

In no particular order, Carolina Speedworks' Shelby GT500 kicks off this author's top five list for the Meet and Greet. No, it's not the latest GT500, but the plain white wrapper paint, and clean look does it for me. If there was ever a sleeper Shelby, this is it.

The Meet and Greet started at 9AM, but if you arrived at 9AM, you were late. The Palace Theatre was already at near capacity by that time, and many had to park in adjoining parking lots, or way in the back. We noticed this with the pre-event festivities, but Mustang Week’s opening day further drove home the point that this event has turned into more than event.

I chose this car because it shows the endless possibilities of how a person can modify a Mustang. The owner wasn't around, but we have to guess this is a 2001 Cobra with either a Terminator swap, or an Eaton on the stock Four-Valve engine. The transmission knob showed a 5-speed pattern so that is our best guess. Either way, I like it.

There were Mustangs from every generation, but it seems the New Edge and S197 cars are taking over. The first generation cars, built from 1964-’73, you can count on two hands. The Mustang II crowd; fittingly, we saw two of them today. Even Fox cars are starting to become increasingly scarce. The same goes for the SN95 crowd with very few cars at today’s Meet and Greet. New Edge and S197 came out in bunches, though, and common thought was that every Terminator ever built was at the Meet and Greet.

To me, this Mustang GT would be the perfect cruiser. The combination of the white exterior with the offset red stripe, red interior, and glass roof option, it's perfect.

Of course, that’s jealousy talking because every Mustang owner, if you don’t own one, you wish you had a 2003-’04 Cobra. Unless you own a 2011-’15 Mustang GT. If that’s the case, you’re probably okay, and rightly so. The 2011-’15 Mustang GT is a great car, obviously, but the amount of them at Mustang Week tells us these cars, and their owners are modifying them with earnest, and throwing caution to the wind. Superchargers, turbochargers, airbag suspensions, wheels, custom paint, and the like, are common sights on the show fields of Mustang Week.

A Reef blue Fox coupe with a black interior, are you kidding?! In the Fox world you have pretty much reached the summit with this combination. It's pretty sad there aren't more Fox cars at Mustang Week, but it's the nature of the beast.

So what we did was come up with our five favorite Mustangs from the Meet and Greet. That is a tough task, what with so many unbelievable Mustangs to choose from. It was indeed tough to pick just five Mustangs from today’s opening day, but both the StangTV editor and I were able to come up with our picks. They are dispersed within this coverage of opening day, along with a gallery of all the action from the Meet and Greet. If you aren’t here, you are missing out, but you already know that.

Maybe we saved the best for last, but since I just picked up another 2001 Bullitt, after owning one a couple years ago, and selling it, I notice these cars. What makes Jesse Teetor's Bullitt different is its True blue paint. The rarest 2001 Bullitt, most people don't know Ford made a blue Bullitt, but they did. Teetor's Bullitt is a low-mile example, and its condition backs up that thought. His Bullitt features a JLT Performance cold air intake, 18-inch replica Bullitt wheels, a Flowmaster exhaust, and more.

Editor Don Creason’s Tuesday Top Five

By Don Creason

The big problem with Mustang Week, even at such a small event as the Meet and Greet, is the sheer number of cars here. As we walked around the show multiple times, we were constantly scratching our heads and debating about what was “worthy” of a top 5 list. We decided in the end that it was nearly impossible to pick, so we had to make it more our personal favorites (-or at least I did).

Another deciding factor here was who was near their car. We found several cars we’d like to shoot for short and long car features, beautiful late model Mustang creations that we could spend hours scruitinizing. The problem was, no one was around, because like us they were out enjoying the event. We’re hoping we have a little more luck tomorrow rounding up a few features, but for today, here’s Editor Don Creason’s top 5 in no particular order.

No one was around this beautiful Fox hatch. It’s kind of a Fobra, with a Cervini’s body kit, but we have to wonder how much power is lurking under the hood. AEM standalone EFI components were mounted to the passenger side floor, and there was a Vortech blower under the hood. This looks just like the car that Mike Post campaigned in EFI Renegade around 2001-02. It could be the same car, but if we remember Mike was from Illinois, and this car was wearing Virginia plates. Regardless, this was a hot car that reminded us of NMRA and FFW days gone by. Mike if you’re out there chime in and tell us if this is your old car will ya?

Before the Coyote, there was the three-valve 4.6 between the S197 Mustang's fenders. While Coyote swaps remain all the rage, this beautifully built coupe with a '82 GT nose was sporting a three-valve swap. The car was well done throughout and we'd love to talk to the owners and look into doing a more in-depth feature.

We couldn't resist a terminator with twin hair dryers under the hood, and Turbosmart wastegates. Radials, and skinnies on the front tell us this car means serious business. It's quite possible every modified Terminator and a few stock ones are here at Mustang Week. We couldn't turn around without seeing one of these cars. The Terminator scene is as hot as it was 10 years ago, and that's great news for our hobby.

This one was another throw back car and that’s why it made Don’s list. With the exception of a modern wheel and tire package, this one is nearly a throw back to the Super Street Outlaw days of the late 1990s. This car wore a Vortech XX-trim supercharger, something we haven’t seen in well over a decade. Tail pipes, street car seats, a Saleen style spoiler and what appears to be full street equipment round out the package. We saw the car earlier in the day, and hoped to locate the owner, when we came back the hood was already closed, but no owner.

Last but not least in Creason's Tuesday Top 5 is this Lightning swapped New Edge. Not only is it Lightning swapped, it's also compound boosted with twin turbos. This car has some serious potential, and is likely packing a big power number. We don't see too many Lightning swaps, and we're pretty sure this guy did a drive by during our evening photo shoots and the car sounded wicked. Regardless we were digging this one.
