Mustang Week 2015 Day 3: Dyno Competition and Drag Strip Action

Coverage and Photos by Michael Johnson and Don Creason

After being picked to compete in the Battle at the Beach dyno competition, each competitor had two passes to show much his/hr Mustang puts down. Pro Dyno’s hard work helped make the event a success.

Mustang Week is moving right along, and we’re already on Thursday, Day 3 of the week-long Mustang celebration. Thursday is a chill day for many Mustang Week attendees, but also an opportunity for various cruises, meets, and general shenanigans. The Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords Battle at the Beach Dyno competition took place this morning at the mall, with Pro Dyno doing the heavy-lifting during the competition to get the cars on and off the dyno. Though not an official show day, Mustangs still show up at the mall, and at the adjoining Hooters to hang out before this afternoon’s cruise and Darlington drag event.

Randy Shanhols 2006 Mustang started life as a V6, it now has a stroked 3-valve, Novi 2200 supercharger, and Ford Racing Hot Rod cams. The exhaust note is awesome, and the wrap by Laid Not Sprayed looked incredible.

Thursday presents an opportunity for various car clubs and groups to get together for cruises and meets. The Coyote cruise/not cruise, took place at the mall today, and there was a 2003-’04 Cobra cruise, as well. For those that don’t want to make the trek down to Darlington Dragway for the drag night, this afternoon presented a few hours to chill, and maybe go to the beach, or cruise up and down the boulevard.

We’re sure this afternoon will be full of small parking lot meets, and more shenanigans. If you aren’t here, you’re missing all the fun.

The Anything Coyote Cruise-In started at the mall this morning just before lunch, and featured various shop, and mail-order giant exposure. The cruise was sponsored by UPR Products, and had a large turnout, which was no surprise due the large population of Coyote-powered Mustangs here this week.

There’s no shortage of Terminator Mustangs at this event, in fact someone commented it looks like every Terminator still streetable is here. That hasn’t stopped us from appreciating these cars, and loving that there remains such a huge following over a dozen years after their debut.

Just after lunch everyone's dreams came true when out of the Ford Performance trailer, the GT350R made its Mustang Week debut. For those that had not been able to see one, it was their chance to get up close and personal with the car, and hear it firsthand. Ford Performance also had versions of the new 5.2-liter's flat-plane crank and heads so everyone could see the difference between the Coyote components and the Voodoo 5.2-liter's components.

Pink is unique.

These two mod swapped foxes caught our eye in front of the Myrtle Beach Hooters. Both wearing turbos and sporting some serious associated hardware, as well as quality craftsmanship.

A Fox Mustang that seemed to disappear for a while is the Calypso cars. We’ve seen more at Mustang Week alone than we’ve probably seen at all other shows combined in the last 5 years.

The first couple days of Mustang Week were void of many Fox Mustangs, but Thursday morning's festivities at the mall told us the Fox community is alive and well. There were many of the breed on the grounds, and many more of them will be represented Saturday morning for Southeastern Foxbodies Cruise.
