This weekend Justin Bell, driving the No. 50 eBay Motors Boss 302S Mustang, looked to take his third victory in as many races in the SCCA World Challenge series. Alas, he had to settle for second place…but in a way, that was good enough.
For Mustang fans, chaotic and disappointing are two words that best describe the second round of the 2012 Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge at Barber Motorsports Park.
For Jack Roush Jr. and Billy Johnson, the opening round of the 2012 Grand-Am Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season was a welcome change from the previous year. After stuffing his Boss 302R Daytona’s turn one tires on the fourth lap of last year’s race, Jack Roush, Jr. was redeemed by taking the win.
Paul had been in and out of driving race cars over the last two decades, but came back professionally in a big way in 2011 by helping to develop parts, through Tiger Racing, for the new Boss 302S race car for Ford Racing. Rum Bum Racing’s Matt Plumb made a late-race pass over Roush Performance’s Billy Johnson to win the 2011 Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge season finale at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course on September 17. The win helped BMW capture the manufacturer’s title, despite an army of fourteen Mustangs entered for the race.
Last weekend’s World Challenge event at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course was a tough, but rewarding one for GTS class points leader, Paul Brown, of Covina, CA. Brown took the top step of the podium in each of the weekend’s double header events.

In winning the B+ Foundation Heroes 200 on July 23rd, drivers Jack Roush Jr. and Billy Johnson returned to second place in the championship.
For Mustang fans, the 2011 Continental Tire Sports Car Festival race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca held July 8-9 was a disaster. The best any Mustang could muster was fifteenth, with Jim Click and Mike McGovern driving their Mustang Boss 302R home behind nine BMW M3s and five Camaros.
After a ten-year absence, Grand-Am Road Racing made a much-anticipated return to Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin’s Road America the weekend of June 23-25, 2011. The Road America 200 ended under the yellow flag, blazing headlights piercing the early evening darkness.

Rounds five and six of the Pirelli World Challenge series were fought at Mosport International Raceway this past weekend, with GTS-class wins split between Mustang drivers Paul Brown of Covina, CA, and Ben Crosland of Salt Lake City, UT.

Roush Performance driver Billy Johnson was looking to win a third consecutive Grand-Am Series race at the south Florida track. He and co-driver Jack Roush, Jr. seemed well-positioned for victory, posting some of the fastest laps in practice and qualifying second to Nick Longhi in the RumBum BMW M3.

Early season testing ahead of this month’s Rolex 24 Hour race at Daytona International Speedway also saw Continental Tire GS-class racers testing their cars and checking out the newly-repaved surface on the 3.56-mile, 12-turn course. Seven Mustangs showed up for the event and some turned in excellent results.
