Words by Bret Kepner, Images courtesy ADRL

Although the American Drag Racing League’s wild new SuperCar Showdown division has only completed its third event, Chris Holbrook will admit it seemed to take forever to enter the winner’s circle. The popular Michigan racer finally hoisted an ADRL SCS trophy in front of a cheering fans after winning the ADRL’s Northeast Drags II presented by Penske at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pennsylvania.

Holbrook beat previously undefeated Bo Butner on driving skill alone in the championship round which, for the third straight event, featured a pair of new supercharged Ford Mustang Cobra Jets in a wheelstanding duel which drew raves from spectators. Holbrook’s victory was the first in series history to be determined by a better reaction time. Holbrook’s silver “Instant Action” Ford clocked 5.88 seconds at a top speed of 119.17 miles per hour in the eighth-mile distance to stop Butner’s quicker 5.82-second run at 118.78 mph.

“To win due to a starting line ‘holeshot’ is the ultimate thrill for a driver”, said an elated Holbrook during the trophy presentation surrounded by his wife, sons and team members. “To finally beat Bo Butner was just as big for us. That’s something we thought we could do at the first two events but Bo has just been unstoppable. Winning another title for Ford is just awesome”.

In fact, the entire event played out almost exactly opposite of the first two races in the series. Beginning with the ADRL’s season-opening event in Houston, Texas, Holbrook’s Mustang had produced the quickest elapsed time of each race and also recorded the fastest speed of each program. Holbrook set the ADRL World Records for ET and speed, (5.75 seconds, 120.33 mph), but fell in the final round to Butner at the Houston race and lost in the semi-final round to fellow Ford Mustang campaigner Ray Skillman at the second SCS battle in Bristol, Tennessee.

Holbrook was the very first driver to submit an entry to the new The SuperCar Showdown features open competition among production vehicles from all automobile manufacturers worldwide with engines, chassis and even tires remaining in factory trim. His Holbrook Racing Engines emporium in Livonia, Michigan, worked closely with the Ford Motor Company in the development of the new supercharged 5.4-liter Cobra Jet engine. In fact, Holbrook’s late father, Carl, campaigned one of the first of the original Cobra Jet Mustangs in 1968.

“Our research and development program has centered on the SuperCar Showdown series. It’s really our main focus”, explained Holbrook. “I mentioned before the season ever started that Jesse Kershaw and Brian Wolfe of Ford Motorsports took this new class very seriously and I can promise you they’re even more intent on winning here now. My own longtime sponsor, Varsity Ford in Ann Arbor, Michigan, is equally committed to this project since they are a Cobra Jet dealership and to win this for them is very gratifying, as well”.

Holbrook’s road to the winner’s circle began as had the first two races in the series. In the very first qualifying session, Holbrook clocked 5.83 seconds at the fastest speed yet recorded for the SCS division, 120.97 mph, to earn the top qualifying position. However, Butner stole the pole spot only minutes later with a run of 5.828/118.08. Incredibly, Holbrook returned in the second qualifying session to knock Butner from the top of the qualifying list by one solitary thousandth of a second with a run of 5.827.

On raceday, Holbrook clocked winning runs of 5.83/118.69 and 5.85/118.59 en route to the championship bout. Butner, whose white Cobra Jet Mustang competes with a Holbrook Racing Engines-constructed powerplant, kicked his day off with a 5.86/118.33 effort but was later nearly upset by another competitor with a better reaction time. Past National event champion Leonard Mattingly of Kentucky, at the wheel of Louisianan Jeff Teuton’s Southland Dodge-sponsored V10-powered Dodge Challenger SRT Drag Pak, recorded the best reaction time in SCS history, (0.015 seconds), and forced Hoosier Butner to streak to the quickest run of the race, 5.80 seconds, to barely pass the Dodge and secure a berth in the final round.

Holbrook, a past Pro Stock World Champion, and Butner, a previous sportsman division World Title holder, knew driver’s reactions would play a key role in the final contest but even Butner was stunned by Holbrook’s brilliant start. “No driver wants to lose on a holeshot”, said Butner, “but I can honestly say, if I was going to lose to anybody, I’m glad it was Chris. This way, it was an all-Ford final round for the third straight race so we all came out of it as winners”.

The next event in the 2012 SuperCar Showdown Series will be the American Drag Racing League’s Gateway Drags IV presented by CarSafe Automotive Repair Protection at Gateway Motorsports Parks in Madison, Illinois, on June 1-2.

The American Drag Racing League’s extremely popular new SuperCar Showdown category now has its first certified superstar. Indiana’s Bo Butner drove his supercharged Ford Mustang Cobra Jet to the winner’s circle at the ADRL’s Spring Drags III at fabled Bristol (TN) Dragway to earn his second title in the first two races of the new series. Ford Motorsports is now undefeated in the new SCS program after producing a another one-two finish with Mustang Cobra Jets and earning top performance honors at both ADRL SuperCar Showdown contests.

Butner, the past drag racing World Champion, met fellow Hoosier competitor Ray Skillman in the championship match of the sport’s only class to feature the world’s quickest and fastest production automobiles in national competition. Skillman, a seventy year-old grandfather whose racing career covers more than fifty seasons, became a crowd favorite when he defeated the fastest driver in the series, Chris Holbrook, in the semi-finals. Butner secured the victory by a full car-length over Skillman while clocking his third straight eliminations run of 5.8 seconds over the eighth-mile distance.

In fact, Butner’s white Mustang clocked three consecutive winning efforts varying no more than nineteen thousandths of a second with a best performance of 5.86 seconds and a top speed of 117.39 miles per hour. The Floyd’s Knobs, Indiana, campaigner thrilled fans with huge wheelstanding launches from the white Ford sponsored by his family’s Butner’s Auto Sales.

“This win means a lot to me and my crew but it’s really all about the Ford Motor Company”, said an elated Butner to fans during champion’s ceremonies at the renowned racing facility in the Tennessee mountains. “With the help of Brian Wolfe and Jesse Kershaw from Ford Motorsports, we made some changes in the gear ratios which produced even more performance than we had when we won the first race in Houston and accounted for those giant wheelstands the crowd loved so much. I know this car is fun to watch but I can promise you it’s a whole lot more fun to drive!”.

Skillman, whose philanthropy is as well-known as his huge chain of Indianapolis auto dealerships, only qualified fifth in the field but was impressive through eliminations and shocked Butner with a sizeable reaction time advantage in the championship battle. “It was a thrill to get back to real side-by-side drag racing”, said Skillman. “I had more fun than I could ever explain. The ADRL treats us as professionals in this new class and the fans were just wonderful. This was our first SuperCar Showdown event but we’ve already revised our schedule to compete in the majority of the series”.

Skillman drove the blue Mustang of his son, Bill, in the race but was joined in competition by his grandson, Drew, in a white Cobra Jet team car which qualified second in the field behind performance standout Holbrook, whose Michigan-based Varsity Ford-sponsored Mustang again led all qualifiers with the quickest and fastest run of the event by accelerating to 118.98 miles per hour in just 5.82 seconds. Drew Skillman lost in the semi-finals after the closest race in series history, clocking 5.87 seconds at 118.53 mph to Butner’s slightly quicker 5.86/117.39 with only 8.31 feet separating the two Fords at the finish line. The SuperCar Showdown features open competition among production vehicles from all automobile manufacturers worldwide with engines, chassis and even tires remaining in factory trim.

The Bristol event included the first female driver in SCS competition in the form of crowd favorite Randi Lyn Shipp who piloted the V10-powered Dodge Challenger SRT of Louisiana veteran Jeff Teuton. Shipp qualified fourth in the field at the helm of the Southland Dodge-sponsored machine but, despite a reaction time “holeshot”, fell to Holbrook in the opening round of eliminations.

The next event in the 2012 SuperCar Showdown Series will be the American Drag Racing League’s Northeast Drags II presented by Penske at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, on May 4-5.

The guys over at Calhoun Racing are putting together a new combo for the new season. With the help of GForce Motorsports, this once Outlaw True Ten Association Ultimate Street and Texas True Ten 5 Extreme Street champion machine is being transformed into a hopeful Outlaw Drag Radial contender.

Coming up from a stock suspension car fitted with UPR and QA1 components, it previously turned a best of 5.08 at 139 MPH with a 1.16 sixty-foot. It was powered by a Kuntz built, nitrous-powered, 434-inch small block Ford topped with Glidden Victor heads and a single Dominator. It ran on two kits thanks to Steve Johnson at Induction solutions and put the power down through a JW-cased Powerglide and Moser 9-inch rear end housing.

The 440 cubic inch, twin-turbo powerplant soon to power Calhoun's Drag Radial machine.

After the season was over, the team decided to take 2010 off to start the transformation into the radial car they wanted. Chris Calhoun began by taking the car down to the bare bones to start fresh from the ground-up. Racecraft Inc. was called upon to handle stuffing the new suspension going into the car with in-house and QA1 components. Deciding on power early on, a twin turbo small block Ford was the choice. HK Racing Engines is the shop behind the 440-inch SBF that’s being fed by a pair Garret Pro Mod 88mm turbos with Tial stainless housings. Using the same Glidden Victor heads as before, Calhoun had Greg Good do some extra work on them to prepare for the boosted setup. To do so, a figure eight style O-ring was installed in the head and custom valve guides were made to house the Inconel exhaust vales and titanium intake valves. Then the block was prepped with O-rings to create a double O-ring setup to contain the boost. A custom, billet runner sheet metal intake was fabricated by Beck to house the Moran billet 235lb injectors and Wilson 105mm throttle body.

All that pressurized air is fed through the car thanks to Rick Stevens Race Cars and is cooled by a Precision 3000 air-to-water intercooler with a custom water box. Fuel management is controlled by Big Stuff 3 and an AMS 1000 boost controller paired with a Racepak setup helps keep everything in check. The man behind the tune-up’s and getting this whole setup put together is Don Bailey of DCB Enterprises. Before getting the engine stuffed in the car, Don and Chris got together with the School of Automotive Machinists for some naturally-aspirated dyno pulls. Hopes are to push this car to the front with some 2,500-plus horsepower.

In addition to the new powerplant, the car has received updates front to rear. The Moser rear end was treated to 40-spline axles and a 3.89 gear. Strange dual caliper brakes were then fitted to help stop this beast. The JW-cased Powerglide was updated with a new valve body and a Hughes gear set. For the 2012 season, Chris plans on running in the Outlaw True Ten Association and the ORTC’s Outlaw Drag Radial class.

Chris wants to give big thanks to Calhoun Construction and GForce Motorsports for sponsoring the build, Don Bailey for the tuning, Greg Good and Kuntz for the head work, Rick Stevens Race Cars for fab work, Judson from SAM for the dyno time, and HK Racing Engines and Erik Koeing for the bullet.

Written by NHRA Communications

NHRA announced its 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule today, highlighted by a return to Gateway International Raceway near St. Louis, which expands the schedule to 23 races.

“We are excited to return to the St. Louis area, as we have a very strong fan base in the region, and they have always supported NHRA Drag Racing,” said Tom Compton, president, NHRA.

A new operator at Gateway International Raceway has made the addition to the 2012 schedule possible. The multipurpose motorsports facility, located in Madison, Ill., just across the river from St. Louis, played host to an NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event for 14 years, from 1997 through 2010. The NHRA Midwest Nationals, Oct. 5-7, will become part of the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship and will feature all four professional categories: Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle.

Another significant change to the 2012 schedule is the return of the 28th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals to a winter date, Feb. 17-19, making it the second event on the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series schedule and the week following the season opener, the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Feb. 9-12.

The 43rd annual Tire Kingdom NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway, March 8-11, will include a special 20th anniversary celebration of Kenny Bernstein becoming the first driver to break the 300-mph barrier in NHRA history. The accomplishment, still considered one of the greatest performance feats in NHRA history, will be celebrated throughout the weekend.

After the East Coast opener in Gainesville, the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will head back west for the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, March 30-April 1, and then crisscross the nation again for the third annual VisitMyrtleBeach.com NHRA Four-Wide Nationals, a spectacle unlike any other in motorsports, at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte, N.C., April 13-15.

The 25th annual O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Spring Nationals will take place April 27-29 at Royal Purple Raceway near Houston, followed by the 32nd annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals, May 4-6 at Atlanta Dragway. Dragway, followed by the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals in Chicago, June 28-July 1.

What has been positioned to become the NHRA’s ultimate Fourth of July celebration for many years to come, the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio, has been moved to July 5-8. As a result, and going forward, the event will be billed as a Fourth of July extravaganza, as it will be held on or around the Independence Day holiday.

As in 2011, the famous Western Swing will begin with the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, July 20-22, followed by the 25th annual FRAM/Autolite NHRA Nationals, July 27-29 in Sonoma, Calif., and conclude with the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals in Seattle, Aug. 3-5. The 31st annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minn., will be held Aug. 16-19.

The final race of the regular season and the event where the fields will be set for the six-race NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship is the tradition-rich Mac Tools U.S. Nationals presented by Lucas Oil, Labor Day weekend, Aug. 29-Sept. 3. The nearly weeklong event, the longest-running and most prestigious NHRA event on the circuit, will take place at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis and celebrate its 58th anniversary.

The six races that make up the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship are the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Nationals, Sept. 14-16 at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte; the AAA Texas NHRA Fall Nationals at Texas Motorplex, Sept. 20-23; and the 28th annual Uni-Select Auto Plus NHRA Nationals, Sept. 27-30 at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa.

The teams will gradually head to the west for the final three races of the season, the first stop at Gateway International Raceway in St. Louis, Oct. 5-7. The circuit heads to Las Vegas for the 12th annual NHRA Nevada Nationals, Oct. 25-28, and will be followed by the season finale, the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Nov. 8-11.

The Pro Stock Motorcycle class will compete in a 16-race schedule, with six of those races in the NHRA Full Throttle Countdown to the Championship.

Tim Matherly has been a fixture in the world of blue oval drag racing since the mid-1980’s. This mild mannered 44 year old has pedaled everything from a Pro 5.0 Mustang, big block Cougar Eliminators, juiced fox bodies, to his current NMRA Real Street ride; a blown 2-valve modular powered 2011 Mustang GT.

Written by: Scott Lovell

Tim seems to be one of those guys who have some sort of built-in rev limiter that controls all of his emotions. Do yourself a favor and walk up to him some time at an NMRA race. You would think that under the pressure of a race weekend that he would be operating in high gear. However, that is not the case. While always friendly, his natural demeanor is one that keeps him from ever being too excited or too depressed and he always seems to be running on an even keel. That is just how Tim is. He truly is one of those people who speaks softy and carries a big stick.

Tim makes a living by owning and operating MV Performance is located in Statham, GA. MVP specializes in all things Mustang related – from chassis fabrication and engine building to dyno tuning, and high performance parts sales. When Tim isn’t racing or working, which is rare, he spends time coaching his 9-year-old son Dawson’s little league team or with his daughter, Autumn, who is 3.

In case you didn’t notice, Tim is 44 years old. Those are human years, not dog years, and so during his time here on God’s green earth he’s had plenty of time to build relationships with a group of companies that are a virtual “Who’s Who” in the world of Ford drag racing. Tim has, and likely will continue to win championships.

Tim Matherly rocking his MV Performance attire

All that being said, we wanted to find out just what is rattling around in the head of the man who puts the “M” in MV Performance. In the past, we’ve seen wars erupt on Real Street internet message boards regarding rules and who’s car and combo has an unfair advantage. Rarely, if ever, does Tim partake. We figured you, like us, would want to know exactly what he thinks about the NMRA’s 9-second bumper dragging “shift-it-yourself” class otherwise known as Real Street.

Matherly is arguably Real Street’s most dominant racer ever. He has compiled championship seasons in 2004, 2007, and 2009. No other RS competitor has better statistics in terms of championships, race wins, and record setting performances. So take a seat, open your mind, and read about it here folks because you likely won’t ever be reading anything like this on a message board!

Stang TV: Tim, the NMRA’s Real Street class has long been called a “driver’s class.” However, a vast majority of all mustangs on the streets today are automatics. If you want to keep the “real” in Real Street, why shouldn’t AOD-type Ford automatic transmissions be allowed in the class?

Tim Matherly: One of the main reasons for me choosing Real Street was the fact that there were no automatics. It puts more responsibility, ability, or lack there of, in the drivers’ hands. I ran Pro 5.0 years ago and put an automatic in my car. The next year I parked it, it was no fun any more.

Stang TV: Along the same lines as the last question, what are your thoughts on allowing 4 valve engines, carbureted engines, and non intercooled turbo engines in to the class? After all, OEM fox and newer Mustangs have come with 4 valve motors, carbureted motors, and turbo motors, yet, never has an OEM Mustang come with a centrifugal supercharger.

Tim Matherly: I support anything that would increase the car count. I am apposed to intercooled entries because that gives an unfair advantage to the fuel we have to use. The answer to intercooled would be to allow good gas. Any combo is ok as long as the rules are equal.

Stang TV: Why did you choose the 2V 4.6-liter supercharged combo for your Real Street car versus any of the other power adder/engine combos available in the class?

Tim Matherly: When we decided to get back into racing we looked at what would be best for our business and what we were working with the most. I had fifteen 2V cars in our shop at the time so that was a no-brainer.

Stang TV: Why did you switch to a 2011 Mustang body when you’ve been so successful with your old car?

Tim Matherly: Times are changing so we had to make a change as well. I was talking with Jesse Kershaw from Ford about the BIW (body in white) program and he asked if I would be interested in one when available? I said “Where do I sign?” I then bounced the idea off a few of my sponsors and they said “We back you 100%, go for it.” 14 weeks later, we had the car at PRI show for Ford.

Stang TV: Speaking of your new car, you have also chosen to build a 3V supercharged combo. Do you feel that the 3V engine has advantages over the 2v? If so, what are they? What do you feel the ET potential of your new 3V combo is in Real Street assuming your new chassis works as well or better than your old chassis?

Tim Matherly: If you have noticed, I have been running my 2V combo in the new chassis. Now that we have a grip on the chassis I can focus on the 3V. I don’t have a good answer yet on any potential for it as it is going to be hard to beat my 2V combination. Needless to say I am not impressed with the 3V yet.

A common final round battle is usually found between Tim Matherly and Bruce Hemminger

Stang TV: We all know that competing in heads-up drag racing means you are constantly pushing your equipment to the edge and parts often break as a result. Back in 2008, you seemed to have been having a lot of engine related problems. Was it in the tuning of the engine or the engine components themselves? What have you learned since then to make your engines last?

Tim Matherly: I was trying to win a championship at all costs. Knowing where the limit is and stepping over it will bite you as it did me on several occasions in past years. I was racing too hard as a result we were hurting gaskets. It is easier just to swap an engine that head gaskets.

Stang TV: Somehow, some way, you seem to always be at or near the top of the qualifying list, even in “nitrous weather”. How are you able to do this?

Tim Matherly: Every point counts towards a championship and in the past I lost by a mere 10 points. That was the difference between qualifying 1st or 2nd and that was a mistake on my part so I try not to let that happen too often. Being a smart tuner has all to do with being competitive in this class, reading the track, the weather, and your opponent.

Stang TV: If you take a look at the other engine combos in the class, in your opinion, what is the ET potential of the pushrod blower combo and the pushrod nitrous combo this year? What about the nitrous mod combo?

Tim Matherly: I really don’t believe, in my opinion, that we have seen the true potential of the pushrod blower combo yet. ET-wise, I feel they can go high-30s in the right conditions. The nitrous pushrod can go mid-30s in the wrong conditions. Who knows the potential of the nitrous modular?

Stang TV: Of these 4 racers: Chris Tuten, Bruce Hemminger, Bryan Meyer, and Yourself, who would you least like to see in the opposite lane? Why?

Tim Matherly: I have respect for all our racers in the class. I have always been told in order to be the best you have to beat the best and I would consider those some of the best. Winning a championship proves that you were the best, or luckiest, or both.

Stang TV: Rumor has it that nitrous/pushrod stalwart, and past champion Bruce Hemminger is out to prove that you’ve been sandbagging and will be racing this season with a 2V Procharger combo under the hood at some point. That is pretty much the same engine combination that you’ve been running for the past several seasons winning those championships. If this turns out to be true, how fast do you think he will go?

Tim Matherly: I will answer this question with a quote from the “Famous In His Own Mind” Robin Lawrence: “The water is warm, come on in…” I know where we are in our program and I know what it is capable of. I sure wouldn’t try and switch to his combination and expect to be on top right out of the gate.

At the time of this writing, Tim was busy defending his 2009 Real Street championship status at the 10th Annual NMRA Ford Nationals in Atco, NJ. Tim tallied yet another race win and record setting performance by running as fast as 9.44 at 144 mph in what was a problem free weekend. The car was fast off the trailer and stayed that way. Not only that, but the two other MV Performance backed cars on the property that weekend also brought home the bucks in the Modular Muscle and Factory Stock classes. Not a bad weekend for Tim, wouldn’t you agree?

At this time, we at StangTV.com would like to thank Tim for his time in answering our questions. We tossed him one more opportunity to talk about anything he wanted. His response: “I need to put out a special thanks to my partner Shane for staying at the shop so I can race and to my wife for putting up with me for so many years of racing. She has been raising the kids and staying home alone so I can get that edge to beat Bruce…” Last but not least, Tim owes a great debt to his lovely wife, Lisa, who is his crew chief and has been by his side for all the highs and lows of his racing career.
